turbo lag and black smoke

Hey Guys!

First I would like to thank you guys for all that you do! You guys are THE best resource I have ever found for my truck!

Second, my little problem... This has been going on for a while but keeps getting worse... every time I take off from a start or so it seems the turbo starts to spool I get black smoke out the tailpipe and it seems like a ton of turbo lag... I also have noticed if the turbo starts kicking in on a hill there is some smoke... It seems like when the turbo hits 8-10 psi it clears up and runs fine w/ no smoke...

Could this be a FICM or Intercooler boots?

Truck is an 06 bone stock except for straight pipe and coolant filter w/ 108k on it...

Any help would be awesome!

Have you checked for any codes?? Do you have gauges/ Scan Gauge? Did you test your FICM for proper voltage at startup....and battery voltage.

I roll into the throttle from a stop and after about 20-30 feet the
turbo seems to have spooled up and it'll take off if I push harder on the
go pedal. It seems about 2k RPM is where the "wow" kicks in.

If I just floor it from a stop, it won't go anywhere and it'll put out
black smoke - unburned fuel. I did replace the air filter and it didn't
change.

that seems very slow, 20 - 30 feet... with my street tune mine kicks in at ~3 secons, but never 5sec or more (under 3,000ft) for wot or a hard pull. on lighter throttle I do not have lag... 20-30ft just does not seem right.

Check for exhaust leaks between the turbo and the exhaust manifolds. Mine does the same and I discovered my Y pipe has a leak.

That would be my first inclination without knowing anything else. High EGTs would be a clear indicator if the OP has gauges. A leak would also get progressively worse as well.

I would not go past 1,500*F. And sustaining temps I would not go past 1,300*F

With my street tune under 4,000ft I cant pass 1,500*F. above I can.

I don't like to go past 1250 if they are going to be sustained temps. Higher then that for short bursts only. Like 2-3 seconds.

Hey guys, I just went and had it scanned and it came back clear... Now this leak that you are talking about in the Y pipe... Where is the Y pipe and how is the best way to check for a leak? Thank you for all you guys input!!! I would love to get this fixed!
