4wd low range light does not come on when i switch to 4wd low
hi y'all, i've got my 2005 psd since april 2011. it's a king ranch. got a bunch of things done on her. replaced egr cooler & oil cooler. replaced with updated dummy standoffs. replaced crossover pipe. did that updated stc fitting.engine oil flush and change. radiator flush and change. changed rear brakes. all motorcraft parts.
when everything was done with this ford mechanic, he mentioned that there might be a short somewhere on the 4wd switch or harness. he says its a common problem with these 6.0 engines. when i put in my key and turn to on to ignite the engine, all lights on the instrument cluster usually comes on. i saw the "low range" light come on. later, when i turned on 4wd high, the 4x4 light came on. but when i switched it over to 4wd low, i never saw the "low range" light come on.
can this prob be just the switch? if it is the switch, is it an easy fix? newbie here. thanks in advance to y'all.

Did it shift into low range? If it did then there is a problem with the circuit to the instrument cluster. That'd be pretty unusual.
It probably didn't shift into low. You have to have your foot on the brake with the transmission in neutral before the control module will even try to shift. With mine, it occasionally has to move a little for the gears to line up also. It's a bit of a trick to get it to roll, then get it into neutral and apply just enough brake to activate the brake switch and turn the **** to low.

hi guys,
thanks for all y'alls replies. sorry i've been out of town. anyway, i will try what y'all suggested and will post back replies asap.
funny thing is, i forgot to write down the error code. that mechanic said that it will not affect my regular driving, and that this is a common problem with the 6.0
but he did say it's related to either the switch of the wiring harness. also, the "low range" light did come on before i sent it to him for repairs totally unrelated to the transfer case. hmmmm......
anyway, stay tuned for my results.
thanks again fellas.

hi guys,
it works! takes a minute to kick in, but it works. funny thing is, i tried that going forward slow and backwards, then i stop and put it in neutral, and all of a sudden, the "low range" light came on! yippee!
it takes some time to come on, but it did!
thanks guys! problem solved! nice to know that there are supportive fellas like u guys.
so final solution: it will take some going forward and backward slowly to engage the gears after i turn on the switch.

Did you try leaving it stopped in neutral with the brake on before moving forward and back? Almost all of the time, you can just put it in neutral and wait a few seconds. From what I hear, every so often, you will have to roll it a bit so that it can engage. That has not happened to me and I use it quite a bit.
