Talking Retired Fire Truck

Hi all,

I just purchased what will be my 3rd restore... A 94 F350 crewcab dually 4x4 with an EFI 460 - with 30,000miles! It is a retired fire pumper truck, now has a utility body on it.

My plan for it is to restore and either install a flatbed or pickup box. It is a vin code F38- which is a cab and chassis frame - skinnier and just a bit longer than a pickup with a skinnier rear axle from what i have read.

My question is have any of you taken a vin code F37 or F38 cab and chassis and installed a pickup box? From what i have read, i will be drilling new holes in a box but there will be a mismatch due to the skinnier rear axle that is placed slightly farther back, and the box will sit about 4" back from the cab - i do not want that ugly mess.

If a P/U box wont look right... I will be installing an aluminum flatbed. I am plenty equipped to build/modify whatever i need to.

Thanks for your help! I know there are plenty of nice looking trucks here, im excited to be a part of it. I'd put pictures up but i cant attach yet i guess.

My F250 is a retired Fire truck. I got it 3rd owner. Last guy let it sit and rot for a bit. Can't beat a fire truck for maintenance done and cleanliness yet they do have a TON of idle hours past what the odometer says.

Is the strobe controller still in that ?

I am the third owner of this one... The guy who bought it from the FD installed the utility body and used it for the past 2 years as a maintenance truck around town. It does have quite a few idle hours.
I havent looked for the strobe controller, but unless it was in the original tank body i will have it. It has a massive center console with all the bells and whistles still installed. The front and rear strobes and sirens and the rooftop lightbar are all in the back seat...

nice buy! as previously stated, cant beat a firetruck for maintenance!
Im interested in the strobe controller though...

I think on the cab/chassis, the frames rails are straight and level, as opposed to the actual pickups, whose frame rails go up and over the axle....

Thanks for the info 12engine... I will be picking the truck up soon and taking her home so i will let you know on the controller. I looked her over good but not that good.

So... It looks like im going to go with a flatbed. Im hoping for some pics from some of you guys so i can formulate what will look good on my truck.

The cab & chassis frames do go up & over the axle. They also get narrower by 1.5" per side right behind the cab... You could probably put bed mounts on the frame.
"tjc transport" put a pickup bed on an F-Superduty, he probably could tell you what he had to do...
