Ugghh Help.....Overdrive switch blinking

Hi All,

Over the weekend did tranny service including droppping trans and putting in TransGo Tugger kit.

My mechanic and I drove it and she felt fine, shifted good etc. Since I am towing (maybe not now) to Ohio Thursday I decided to take truck to work putting 110 miles on it today round trip.

All fine on ride up the Garden State Parkway, cruising at 65 mph and rpms are a little under 2,000, tranny temp is 140 so all i good.

On ride home I go to pass someone and and get up to about 70 and the tach starts bouncing around, truck is doing 65-70 but tach rpm needle is going between 1000-3000 I was like WTF.

I then notice the overdrive button blinking like every second, not intermediate the rest of the ride home in stop and go traffic. I would accelerate and the shifts foet ok but a couple times the 3-4 seemed to get hung up and had rpms hanging at 2500, so I would back off the pedal. Then at another point of ride home the 3-4 was fine and at 65 mph rpms were a touch under 2,000 so I dunno.

Not sure if the transgo install had something to do with it, but it was fine all day saturday and ride up today.

I get home and put my little scanner on truck and it said no codes, started truck back up and light didnt come on, put it into drive and light stayed off.

Any ideas boys? Will this ruin my trip to Ohio? I assume it's not safe to two if that light is on for 550 miles each way hauling a car and trailer and four people.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Rich

You need to find out what code was stored when the OD light was flashing. The tool you used wasn't capable of reading Ford transmission codes. Hopefully the codes were not erased when you tried to read them.

Without the codes nobody knows what's going on.

Thanks Mark......I just got back from a 25 minute ride and trans shifted fine under light and heavy load and light did not come on at all.

I will take truck to work again tomorrow and see what it does.

Thanks again.

try pulling and cleaning or replacing speed sensor in rear end.

Update

Ok here's the latest update.

Drove truck again to work (55 miles one way) truck shifted flawlessly both at low and heavy acceleration, nice crisp shifts in each gear and at 65-70mph the rpm's were right around 2,000. The tranny temp was about 140 all the way up.

Lunchtime I run to another buddys shop who is a diesel mechanic and he puts his real scanner on it and we get tranny codes P1728 and P0781 and I tell him truck ran great. He says drive it home and see how she does and let him know. I asked him would he drive it and tow to Ohio and he said yes, just keep an eye on it and if it comes back on reset it by turning off truck.

P1728 is transmission slip and P0781 is 1-2 shift problem, both of which I don't have in driving the truck about 150 miles between yesterday and all day today.

Well I drove home and truck again ran flawless again with tranny temps of 155.

Is it possible the install of the TransGo Tugger kit with new springs in valve body and pump "tricked" the stock trans in some way and it threw a code? I dunno I am just guessing here guys.

Let me know your thoughts and this and if you would drive to Ohio from NJ.

Thanks as always for your help.

I think it is possible that the Tugger caused the P0781. That code looks for a certain RPM drop during the shift within a certain time. I can't remember if the right RPM drop too quickly can set a code. I know it can set if the RPM drop takes too long. I can't see how the Tugger could set a P1728, but maybe I'm wrong.

I'd drive it. Neither code is a job stopper to me.

Thanks Mark.....that makes three guys much smarter than me telling me it's ok so I think I will go with it.

Checked fluid tonight and it is nice and red and smells like tranny fluid.

So packing the cooler and beers tomorrow and putting car on the trailer and off we go Thursday AM.

Thanks again.
