68 steering column
hey guys, i have a 68 f100. I want to replace the steering column with one from the junk yard or ebay. It has power steering. I would like tilt and its an automatic. Which ones would be a direct fit? I have read in here that your installing from 71,73,77 even from a 83. Is that the way to go? I want cheap, no way paying the price for a new one..Please fill me in on easy way to go. thanks hooty1

If you've got the saginaw p/s box, you can use any a/t p/s column from 68-79. Tilt was available only in '78/'79 and these fit also. If you've got a bendix p/s box (roughly same physical size as the manual box), I'd swap it for the saginaw box so you can use the newer columns. '80 and up columns won't fit without modification.

1966/68 F100/250 2WD, 1969 F100/250 2WD before serial used Bendix P/S.
1969 F100/250 2WD & F350's from serial number D96,001, 1970/72 (and etc) F100/250 2WD & F350's used Ford (Saginaw) P/S.
P/S was not available for F350's before serial number D96,001.

NOT TRYING TO HIJACK
I also have a steering column question about my 68'. I have a column from a 79' in there now, to fit with my 79' power steering box. I would like to go back to the 67-72 style column.....but I now have a B&M floor shifter.
I need a column that will fit with power steering and has no shift collar on the column. Is there such a thing?

Since the firewall is basically the same steering columns from 65-79 will exchange. The spot weld cuff under the dash is deeper on the older trucks. One can use longer bolts or swap the cuff.
The big difference is that the Saginaw pump has the hose/tube connects on the top of the gear and require the column to be about 2 3/8" shorter, which most of the 73-79s are. The 70 column is most likely to be the longer of the two, and not a good candidate.
Bill ND can verify, I believe all you need to do is swap the cuff off the top of the column to one for a floor shift and you will have the smooth side.

1961/66 F100/250 2WD 4 speed / 1966 F100 4WD 4 speed / ALL 1967/77 F100/350 4 speed // 1962/66 Falcon/Comet 4 speed / 1963/64 Galaxie 4 speed / 1963/66 Fairlane 4 speed.
1965/66 Mustang (all A/T & M/T are floor shift) / 1965/66 Galaxie/LTD 4 speed w/o tilt wheel / 1968/69 Mustang/Cougar A/T & M/T w/o tilt wheel.
No one has any NOS, but 1,660,000 1965/66 Mustang's came with it, so it's not that hard to find used.
