Help putting the beast back on the road

Unfortunately life has gotten in the way of getting the 59 back on the road, but I'm thinking I may be in a position to start going forward (a little) again. Quick overview.
The 292 is an original '60 that was transplanted some 16 years ago with approx 70k miles. It runs good, but is gutless at my elevation (9k foot). I had plans on a whole new motor, stepping up the cam and some head work (Mummerts aluminums would be sweet), but the budget does not exist. What I need is a little more power...enough to shift from 3rd to 4th and still maintain 55-60 coming up a mountain pass.

My Questions..... Would dumping points and installing an igniter gain me anything? If so, what is the easiest to install? My automotive skills are limited these days. Would a 4-barrel intake/carb help out much? If so, are Mummerts a good fit and would I go low or high rise? Which carb? I am familiar with AFB's, but have no idea what would be a good fit. Exhaust? Ramhorns or headers? If headers, any ideas what would fit around a 59 4x4 front end?

Brakes... current brakes are shot all around from little idle for many years. I like the idea of non-power assisted disk's and have seen some reasonably priced setups in LMG...but are they worth it?

I'm leaning towards these items because they would be able to be used when and if I ever get capable of having a motor done.

I figure I either get rid of the truck and buy a newer piece of crap or drop a couple grand into it to make it a good, solid driver for the 15-20 times a year it would get driven. My dilemma is time and ability to work on it (back injuries).

Input greatly appreciated. I know I've asked a lot of these questions before, but as I said, turns in life have unfortunately gotten in the way.

Thanks in advance,

-Dave
