If by chance you're located in Iowa I would gladly trade you a pair of 3.55 axles for your 4.10s. I have 3.55s in my 95 F250 with 315/75/16s and could definately use a little lower gear.

I'm sorry but I disagree with you.

I have always towed and hauled stuff and ran in OD(if it will hold that gear). I habe never had a issue. Its the constant up and down shift that will kill the trans.

On my pickup the difference between OD and the next lower gear is around 1000 rpms difference. On the hwy that makes a big difference. 3400 rpm at 75 vs 2400in OD . That's a huge difference.

I agree. It the shifting is what heats the trans up. And as for towing w a manual in OD. I do it EVERYDAY

I live in the hills and I just don't do it. In my auto truck it hunts for gears even on the interstate. They aren't level by any means. In a manual trans, to pull any kind of hill you would most likely have to give it more gas to maintain the same speed you would in 4th.

I've always heard it's just not a good idea to tow in OD. And I don't tow anything faster than 65 mph.

Bottom line I guess if your comfortable doing it, go right ahead.

Then you can just swap the whole rearend and it costs a days labor, some beer and a little money for unexpected problems. Otherwise, I agree. If you went from 10mpg to 13mpg, it would take ~11,000 miles to recoup a $1000 at $3.85/Gal. That's a years worth of driving for some people. The money is better spent on a quality tune-up or on a $800 "beater" Ranger or something that get 2X the MPG.

That sounds about right to me.

To the OP, you bought the wrong vehicle for fuel economy. If you aren't using it to tow then you might as well get something else. I've got a 96 F250 4x4 and when I'm in 2 wheel the best fuel economy I've seen so far is 16 mpg on the freeway doing around 50 mph. People flash their lights and honk but all they can do about it is pass me lol.

The best bang for your buck is new spark plugs, wires, properly inflated tires, and a decent aftermarket air filter. Maybe some synthetic oil and mid grade gas if that money is burning a hole in your pocket.

I don't think you're wrong. I'm gonna call BS on the 17 MPG with a 460.

I have to wonder if someone didn't re-gear that 460 with 3.55's b/c it seems like most 460's around here are 4.10's???? If so did they recal the speedo after re-gearing it? Also there might be a discrepency if one of those trucks had the old 3spd C6 instead of a 4spd auto...??? Just trying to make heads or tails of the mpgs. I don't doubt the owner calculated 17mpgs but that doesn't mean it's correct if one of his inputs isn't correct...

As far as i know ( based off door sticker) I have a 3.55's in my 88 f250 460. I would hate to see the rpm's on the interstate with 4:10's.

My buddy has a 460 F-250 with 3.55s. He gets 11 MPG on a good day. He usually gets around 10.

My 96 460 had 3:55 as well. They are a torque monster and are NOT an rpm engine. the 3:55 suit them quite well unless you are towing near the MAX of the GCVW

My 351 has a 3:55 non-ls. I wish I had at least 3:73s or similar with my current tires. And a ls would be great but...I suppose every basket has at least one rotten apple.

You know... I got looking into my truck pics on my computer and I don't see the dual tail pipes from when I had the 10.25 open. I might have completely freaked out the other day that my LS with 3.55's wasn't working but I might have an open diff in thumper and the LS is in thor or zeus! Shart!

I wish I had 4.10's with a V8 sometimes too... But then I think about the gas milage 4.10's and 351w would get... One of these days I'll run across a clean F350 with 4.10's and a shot motor and/or tranny and put myself together a 351w ZF 4.10 LS (or locker) truck. Hell I was kinda hoping the 83 had 4.10's but i'm pretty sure she's 3.55's.

Out of all 5 trucks I have 4 of them have 3.55's and not sure about the 86 white f150... It might have 4.10's but probably not since it had a 300 I6 and 2wd. Even if it did I wouldn't get anything out of 8.8in 4.10's since I would still have to buy 4.10's for the d44 front on the f150. D44's and D50's are such a PITA to get into to swap gears I'm not sure I'll ever want to swap... The 3.55's give the best of mpgs and HP/TQ for the adverage user.

In closing Kevin; You might have 1 rotten apple but I have 4!!!!!!!!

Just checked a old post and got my vins V106C = 3.55 non LS 10.25... GRRRR! the LS must be in the 89 f250...

So any one want to trade 3.55's for 4.10's LOL!!!!!!!! I'll even go for 3.73's Anyone???? anyone??? LOL (this is just a joke b/c I know most won't give up the 4.10's)
