Mobil 1 Filters

Stopped on the way home yesterday to get a M1-601 for my 7.3L and noticed that Mobil (or their supplier) has changed the filter design - the area around the threads now has a real thin raised wall instead of the thicker base i'm used to seeing. As hard as these filters are to get off after 7k i'm afraid that the base around the threads would shear off leaving me in a pickle at the next oil change. Been getting good UOAs with the Mobil filters so i'm disappointed about the change - looked a couple of places to see if I could find the old style, no luck. Ended up w/ a Bosch filter - have to wait and see what the next analysis says. Don't like changing filter brands that often but it looks like they've cheapened the mob filters. Had a good string of UOAs going now i'm back to having to figure out what the best interval will be w the new filter. Not having a prior history means I can't go my usual interval this time.

Just curious, but why did you not consider opting for the specified Motorcraft filter????

If your having problems removing the old filter after only 7K miles, do you lube the filters base gasket seal before installation & are you certain your not over tightening the filter on installation, no tools, hand tight, 1/2-3/4 turn after the base gasket contacts it's sealing surface????

Not overtightening - tighten by hand only - we drive a lot of hwy miles and even though we coat the gasket in oil the gaskets tend to stick making them tough to get off - we're running 6-7 months or 7500mi whichever comes 1st btw changes. Motorcraft filters are my 2nd choice if I can't find a long life filter - the UOA insolubles % always was higher w/ the motorcraft filters than with the Mob 1. If I could afford to change oil every 4-5k I'd probably be ok w/ using the motorcrafts. We were using fleetguard stratapore filters for quite a while but @ $23-25 a filter we just couldn't afford the cost hit anymore. We have 8 250's & 4 350's - oil changes get expensive @ 4gal per truck

Well maybe consider lubing the filter gasket with a rubber friendly, longer lasting product, like PTFE loaded Super Lube grease. Permatex used to market it & I've seen their spray oil product in places like "K-Mart" locally. The PTFE may stay in place & help with filter removal later.

That is interesting since the specs on the FL1995 are pretty good. 18 microns at 98% or so. What about giving baldwins a whirl, 23 microns @ 98.6% and around 8-10 bucks each at fleetpride.

ELF7045!!!! That provides the lowest % by far cost is high about 24.00!!! As much as I HATE Fram but the TG3786 filter sold at Walmart is made by Baldwin for FRAM and is a very nice heavy duty filter with great UOA's!!!! Cost is about 14.00

Yes we have - numbers were good (not quite as good as the mob filter but comparable) but our local NAPA guy doesn't discount much off the MSRP so the price falls in line with the Mob 1 & Bosch filters - we use them from time to time when we have to change a bunch of trucks at the same time and we can get a case discount

True enough. Never known a NAPA dealer to be cost effective.
