Fried fusible link

I've just bought a donor 1983 F150 to do a manual trans swap into my F250 with -
(I know the C6 is a good transmission, but.....I'm just not into automatics) - & I installed the battery backwards.

The previous owner had switched the red & black battery cables......I didn't notice before the damage was done.

Anyway, the result is a melted fusible link leading from the starter solenoid to the alternator, & no power anywhere.

Can anyone tell me the capacity of the fusible link for replacement? It appears to be a black/orange (maybe black/brown) wire with an orange 'fusible link' tag on it, that's no longer readable.

I'm hoping there isn't any more damage downstream of the link

Thank you!

The Fuse link you will need is a 16 gauge. The Orange "TAG" denotes 16 guage.

Part #: D3AZ-14A526-E for one with the eyelit connector on the one end.

You should be able to get one at the local parts store, but you may have to figuratively speaking, "crowbar" the clerk to get him/her to understand what you need.

A fuse link is always two sizes smaller than the circut it protects. A 16 guage fuse link protects a 14 gauge wire. etc...

Be sure to check the alt and regulator. Both have diodes that can blow when the polarity is reversed.

Not sure how available this item would be at a parts store in NZ, but you should be able to something that will work.....

OK - Thanks, & I'll check for any discharge too.

What does 16 gauge equate to in amps value?

The 16 guage fuse link has to resist up to at least 60 amps.

on 70 amp and higher altenators, the green color or tab 14 guage fuse link was used.

You would be surprised how many times this happens on these threads. Same thing happened to me a few months back and the guys here were really helpful. Be careful and be vigilant. After my problem was fixed, my alternator started working weak, and finally failed in the middle of a parking lot in the middle of winter. Keep an eye on the alternator because if something was switched it may have weakened it like on mine.
