Fog Light metal cover

The little metal square light diffuser in my fog lights have both broken. Started with one side now the other side has done it. I recently installed HID headlights and have the ones for fog lights but worry about that metal piece smaking the bulb and breaking it. Can i get those metal covers out?? Or do I need to buy new fog lights?

Thanks

You may be able to get them out by somehow breaking them up from inside the housing and pulling the pieces out through the bulb hole. I believe they put them in there to reduce glare, but the 05 and up fog lights don't have them, so I don't think they're necessary.

As for the HID bulbs in the stock housings, you do realize that's illegal right? Not to mention unsafe for other drivers...

There-in lies the problem, you'll be able to see, but no one else will as they'll be blinded by the glare off those things.

I recently had a fog get damaged. I ended up getting replacement "smoked" fog assemblies for about the same cost as clears. My truck's black. I'm running 05 Harley headlamps so they fit the bill. Just something to think about.
Oh, and as a side note, I ended up repairing my damaged stock fogs and mounted them below the rear bumper as aux back-up lights.

Are they the smoked ones off of ebay? Have they fogged up on you aat all??

I also did the black harley light conversion on my truck and have been looking at the smoked ones, but dont know how much light output they will take away

Yup, they're from ebay. I didn't notice a difference at all, especially with the HIDs. However, they're not as "smoked" as I'd like. In some lights, they look great!!! Really dark. Other times (direct sunlight) they seam to have a slight grey-ish tint. I still think they're better than the stock fogs (for my truck at least).

And here are a few of the relocated stockers....

ok awesome thats what I wanted to hear. I really like what you did with your stock lights looks really good.

Did you have to trim the brackets at all??
The smoked come with that wiring kit did you use it or just tap into your reverse lights?

They would come in handy for me since my taillights are smoked which killed my back up lights.

Thanks.
I removed the plastic brackets completely. Tried to tuck 'em up as high as possible to keep them safe. I ran a power wire from the battery and trip the lights through a relay with the factory reverse light as the coil trigger. Stock SD reverse lights are lame to begin with, they only get worse with tinted tails and/or tinted windows.
(I ran an additional relay and switch in the cab that allows me to turn the aux reverse's on at any time - ideal for hooking trailers at night.)
