this thing: what is it?

I have a 78 F350 former U-Haul truck. This is on the passenger's side firewall. I am curious what it is.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

It says "Sturdy Controls" across the front. It has a cable that's not attached to anything, that kinda looks like a servo control to me.
My guess is either some sort of primitive cruise control, or RPM limiter.

anyone know?

thanks,
-Steve

All I see is the dreaded red "X" instead of a picture.

I've had odd luck Googling part numbers and stampings. Try that and see what comes up.

How is it powered and when, if observable, does it energize?

You could go to an ACTUAL Uhaul dealer and ask an older mechanic there. They might can tell you.

If its a road speed inhibitor it might actually be 88 mph that it kicks in.

This is my guess as well. Every UHaul I've ever driven was speed governed.

I drove a Uhaul F350 box truck from LA to Scottsdale in the early '80s. 300 six, automatic. It was governed at about 60, maybe 65. You could feel it pull the throttle back.

Hah, flux capacitor. I don't think this truck will even get up to 88 mph, even with that governor disconnected!

I'm gonna take it out but wanted to know what it is.
I had a feeling that servo attached to the throttle....

I worked at Uhaul for a while in college. Some of our E350's were not governed. I had one up to almost 80mph (floored) and with 8-10" or steering play I was surprised I made it back in one piece. The local trucks were junk though and the shop was useless. I did most the repairs myself.

I wasn't around for the dead llama though.....
