I have a 2002 F250 with the 5.4 Gas V8. It started making a rattling sound when on the gas about 4 months ago. Now it is getting louder when in 2ND gear going into 3RD. It will go away if I let off on the gas, or if it shifts into 3RD. I already checked the obvious for loose heat shields.
Anyone had this problem?
BTW, in case it is related. My rear main started leaking. I'm thinking the noise is engine RPM related because it changes pitch with the engine speed. It sounds like a Dodge pickup Cumins Diesel engine (Yuck!)
Could be a cat breaking up, or a bad cam follower those are problems I have found on both mine, but 02 should have improved oiling so cam follower would be unlikely, IIRC!
