The "C6AP--" you see in the first photo is a casting number that doesn't tell when the part was made, just when this one was first made or designed.
C = 1960s
6 = 1966
A = Ford full size
P = auto trans
There is a smaller circle with a 4 over a 71. My guess is that is the date code, although it does not follow the usual date code pattern as found on engine blocks for example.

The bottom pic appears to be a partial VIN, which would indicate this was originally installed in a 1971 car. The A would indicate the car was originally assembled at the Atlanta plant. Give that partial VIN to Kevin Marti and he can most likely tell you the exact car that trans came in. That info won't come free however.

Well, have done a little research on my own, and that does seem to be a date stamp of 4/71 which is in line with what the PO had told me in regards to it's year...I removed the input shaft and counted the splines on each end...mine was a 26/24 spline which is indicative of a post 1971 C-4 transmission from what I can gather....
this is from wikipedia...
"The early model C4 (1964-1969) used a .788-inch 24-spline input shaft, which was upgraded in 1970 to 26-spline and .839-inch. The upgrade also included a matching clutch hub of 26-spline. In 1971, Ford went to a 26/24-spline input shaft, meaning the torque-converter side is 26-spline and the clutch hub is 24-spline"

1A28: 1 = 1971 / A = Atlanta GA assy. plant / 28 = Fairlane 500 4 Door Sedan, body style 54B.
That C6AP number is not the trans code, it's the ID engineering number for the part it's marked on.
Originally, the FoMoCo TRANS ID tag was under one a the bolts that retains servo cover to the trans case. It appears to be missing, because...
ID engineering number: C6AP-7D027-C = Ford part number: C4AZ-7D027-A .. C4 Intermediate Band Servo Cover.
Applications: 1964/68 289 / 1968/72 302 / 1971 Fairlane/Torino 302 C4 ID tag code: PEE-V2 or PEE-V3
D1AZ-7017-A .. C4 Input Shaft-9 3/4" long / 24 & 26 splines. Introduced 1971.
