1300 mile road trip in my 67

I survived it. A trip to Albany, OR and back with no issues...mechanically speaking. I dropped in a 2.75 gear set last month to help the mpg. It was better, but i only got a best of 13.5, which is 2 better than before. It got 11.5 if it was going closer to 75. I'm still pretty happy with how smoooth it drives on the hiway. The steepest hill kicked me down to about 40 in 4th, so it kept a decent pace.

I was only worried about a couple things that I didnt know the condition of. The carrier bearing, water pump, and fuel pump. Almost everything else has been replaced within the past 4 years.

That's pretty good mileage. It's nice when she purrrs, rather than winding out on the highway. It reminds me of my old 66 Dodge pickup with low gears and a slant six. Driving at 65, I always felt like a piston would come flying through the hood at any time.
My 74 highboy, now, has 4:10s with a 4 speed and 460. But she's more of a work truck and doesn't see the highway much these days. But when I do go down the hill and into town, she sure sucks up the gas keeping those RPMs up there. Mostly try to stay local with her.

I think the real test for me was having all 3 kids with me. Isn't 67 an optional seatbelt year? Would I get a fat ticket with 2 kids in the same belt? I saw plenty of police patrolling, but havnet been pulled over yet. Then again, they may not have seen the youngest, he's a tad short for a 9 yr old.

I've never even had a cop look sideways at me when driving the '68. I think most of them are smart enough to know that a truck that old has lap belts only and there's no way they can see if you're wearing them. As you don't do anything else to catch their attention and give them probable cause to pull you over and check you out, you're probably okay.

I drove the '68 to L.A. and back twice last winter, pulling a two-car hauler both times. That's an 800 mile round trip, not to mention all the driving around to different parts of L.A. on the first trip which added an extra 200 miles. Truck did great and averaged 10 MPG, which isn't too bad considering I was hauling about 10K lbs. with the trailer loaded and 4K with it empty.

I had a rear wheel bearing start to go on the first trip down but it got me the rest of the way there and back home again okay, and I upgraded the rear axle by swapping in the one from my '72 parts truck after I got home.

It's $38 for a round trip, but again....kids. It's hard to get away....long story.

Congrats on the big trip. I would be hesitant to do that in my highboy due to gas costs (11mpg on a good day) and just over all reliability. I would use it for heavy work though.
