i recently rode in a idi truck that was severely de-tuned.talk about nutless.i don't think he had any more than 50hp at the rear wheels.seriously!i dunno how it would even go uphill after riding with him on flat ground with the skinny on the floor!
granted it was just a zf5 truck (hehehehe) but still.
don't try and run a worn out idi guys.we don't have much margin for error.
it was a tow truck setup,so why the owner he bought it from, let it get so bad is beyond me!
i kid you not,a 300-6 would have moved that truck far faster and easier. he had all the symptoms of shot injectors and retarded engine timing.i could tell instantly before the ride with him.clear as day to me.
if your diesel smokes and stinks like unburnt fuel, and does pretty much nothing when you hit the skinny,or shake like crazy when backing up or taking off, your injectors are shot! you waited way toooooooo long to replace them lol.don't do that guys! it'll cost you more in fuel than just spending a couple hundred bucks on some remans at least.
My van moves pretty damn quick I must admit, but it runs absolutely horrible in high RPM's.
Sitting there, if you rev the engine beyond 3k, it starts shaking violently, shooting out blue smoke, and smells soooooo bad. But it runs fine under load.
Apparently the IP and injectors were replaced, but I don't believe that one bit, as it's the only thing the previous owner couldn't show me proof of, and the injectors aren't gray, they're rust color, and the return lines look ancient, if not original!
The IP has been removed however, I noticed that. I'm gonna put my new set of injectors on it though.

I just put the turbo on my second idi but the injectors and pump are 197000 mile originals. Talk about a dog. I just ordered new so hopefully I'll be back to smokin tires er..."turning in respectable MPG's" by next weekend.

Being "gutless" is just part of the 6.9s nature, these trucks are not hod rods, nor will they ever be. However they are very reliable and easy to fix. I have ran several of these trucks, and while none of them have been real powerhouses, they all served their purpose well and pulled anything I ever hooked behind them without any major issues. If you want to make them keep their speed going up hills and take the dogginess out of them, put a turbo on it. You can also turn up the IP to put out a bit more fuel, but invest in a pyrometer and keep close eye on your egt's, anything over about 1250 deg can melt these engines down. Another trick is to advance the inj timing a bit, but I would recommend that to a professional diesel mechanic. I see alot of people putting down the IDI diesels and saying they were junk, the people who think this do because they are expecting more out of the engine than what it is capable of giving them. The 6.9/7.3 IDIs will never be the powerhouses that the PSDs were, just like the 6.2/6.5 GM diesels will never be able to compete with the Duramax. That being said, I still get a good chuckle out of pulling up to a customers yard with my 83 6.9 or my 98 Chevy 6.5 and loading up their PowerStroke or Duramax to haul it back to the shop and repair an electronic issue.
