Heater Core

I have a 2002 F150 4.6. While traveling from Fla. with the A/C running, a mist came through the dashboard vents and it smelled like anti-freeze. It was diagnosed by Prime Ford that it is the heater core. I got the smell, but no mist a couple of times after. This weekend while on a 200 mile trip, I ran the A/C and there was no smell. Is this something that happens occasionally when the heater core is going, or could it be something else? I do not want to spend $ 1200.00 to replace, if thats not what it is. Thanks

Definately the heater core. They are a real bear to replace in these trucks too, as the entire dash has to be removed (or at least pulled out and set on the seat bare minimum).

Replace it with a Four Seasons brand heater core if possible, as they are the best.

There used to be a great, detailed write-up of how to do it on here...although it is saved on my other computer. I did it in a weekend taking my time.

Thanks for the info ATC Crazy. Prime Ford told me it is a very labor intense project, but at 70 years old I guess I will pay them to change it.

Have them check the blend door also while there in there, because if it breaks and most do it'll all have to come out again! The blend door assembly is cheap $, the labor is not!
