truck overheating? fan clutch?

on my 93 f150 4.9l i had recently swaped the transmission into it and it has been sitting 6 months since i took the old one out, but my truck was over heating so i thought the thermostat got stuck from sitting so i replaced it but i didnt get it to seal right so today i fixed the seal and no leaks but i am using straight water for right now till i figure the problem out, but the truck is still over heating, what else could it be? the radiator cap is new.

i noticed when i stop on the side of the road i poped the hood and shut the truck off but when i looked at the fan it was still free spinning. could the fan clutch be bad? it free spun for about 10-15 sec or more. i have a friend that got rid of his taurus so he kept the fan for his truck but he isnt going to use it so he said i could have it, i might put that on tomorrow and just run it to a straigh switch so i can have it on all the time cause i will be towing my 86' bronco on a 12,000# trailer so my truck will be working a little bit.

how do i check the fan clutch?

My new (to me ) old truck is getting hot to . I put a new clutch on it. My new clutch is hard to turn. Now I got a new 2 row radiator to put in it.My Mazda truck fan clutch went out about a year ago. It would cool down going down but when I stopped it would get hot really fast.

Turn it by hand, try to "launch" it. If it stops after a couple turns, it's working ok, if it keeps turning like it's free, the fan-clutch is already too worn and need to be replaced. I would recommend replacing it with a new part, you don't want to go cheap with the engine's cooling, and fan-clutchs aren't that expensive.

Like Encho said... also running straight water isn't helping matters either. It's hard on the water pump will begin to rust up the water jackets if not mixed with the proper 50/50 ratio of water/coolant.

Start the truck, then watch the fan from the side.....If its wobbling, its getting ready to take flight off the runway....And coincidentally, the radiator is right there in front....

My 94' probably had a good inch of play.....But at 250k miles...I guess it had a right to be tired....

And as other have said...if you can spin it, and it keeps spinning freely, its worn out....

well i am just running straight water to make sure their are no leaks and am not throwing money into coolant if it is pissing out of the truck but now i have no leaks so i will drain water and fill with coolant.

well the clutch was bad so my friends taraus fan was a single one not a dual fan but it is working great so far. i might look for dual fan so it will cover the whole radiator.

I would replace it because it's cheap and easy on the 4.9L. I had to do mine a few months back.

It should spin with some resistance on its own since it should have a fan clutch

well got the problem fixed, i think the fan clutch was shot but i took the a/c condencer out for better flow to the radiator but when i took the pressure washer to the radiator it was clogged with sand/mud from mudding, i figured this was the problem in the first place too, now the temp guage only goes up to N or O.

I had same problem but just noticed the thread. One thing i have been a little skeptical on is the original temp guage always read in the middle. Since i got new thermostat it never goes to the R unless im doing 90 plus. Is this normal for this motor to run that cool. I live in FL and its hits 100 plus with humidity almost every day. I dog the hell out of this truck but honestly doing 80 plus for 40 to 60 miles a day i never hit the R unless i am haulin or just ******* it at speedo max for 10 plus min (as i watch my gas gauge go down ) but my motor doesnt knock at those speeds at all!, i had buddy next to me and my i6 will hit ~108 stock
