Exclamation Speed density to mass air

Alright i know i am new to this forum and to modding my truck so any help would be appreciated,
i have a 1993 ford f150 with a 5.0, i am looking to convert it from its current speed density setup to a mass air system.
I don't know much about this process, if someone could help me with some steps to follow, things to look for, and basically a how to manual i would really appreciate it. please treat me as an extreme novice! But i am not mechanically stupid.

Search the forum it's been talked about a lot up here and if I run across a 4.9L with MAF setup in the junkyard I too will be attempting the swap and will look for the info just as you must.

Much depends on the transmission, with a manual or non electronic auto(and a V8) you can use a Mustang computer, but with an E4OD or 4R70w you have to use a truck computer. Ford used to sell a MAF conversion kit for the AOD and manual trucks but it's long discontinued.. they occassionally turn up on the used market however. The DIY method involves reclaiming all the necessary parts from a donor vehicle, ideally you'll get a computer and MAF from the same vehicle and a harness from another truck. However there is no easy harness swap with later trucks, you will have to remove the necessary wires from the donor harness and add them to your truck.

What are you doing to your rig that requires a mass air swap? You can do many bolt-ons and keep it speed density.

So how do I check what transmission that is in my truck?

As for the reason for doing a swap, won't I be able to get more power from mass air? Can't I alter the computer?

It has an electronic transmission.

What do you plan on doing to the truck/motor?

I thought about putting headers on it and what ever else to help boost the performance, I wanted to do this so I didn't have to buy a completely different motor i.e. 351, or429

I think you're putting the cart before the horse. You are throwing parts and spending money to fix problems that you might not have because you don't seem to have a clear picture of the project. With a project like this you are doomed to fail if you don't plan as much out in advance as possible.

What will you use the truck for? Will it be a daily driver?

What's the budget? How much HP/TQ are you looking to make?

IST (interactive systems and technologies) sells a kit that will convert to MASS Air. I used it with my 92 F150 (E4OD tranny). I would suggest calling them and just asking questions, as if you are going to buy.

For me, this involved removing the computer, replacing it, doing a good bit of re-wiring, installing a new O2 sensor, and a new transmission controller. I wouldn't say it is the most difficult thing in the world but it is tedious. I upgraded in prep for a 500 hp 351W I am building.

If you plan on just some headers or even a mild cam, you don't need to convert it. There are a few SD friendly cams available, and a forum search will get you the manufacturer and part number for the best ones. Exhaust discussions are also plentiful. I also thought about a MAF swap for my 351 like you are, but after reading the threads I have, I realized I'd be wasting time and money doing it.

Now, if you plan on building a hotrod, that's a different story.

So I've been reading a lot of the post on the conversion to mass air I have a 92 f150 xlt with 302 with a E4od. I've read that the 94/94 f150 or bronco will work if I get the computer with the harness and the meter. I already have a computer from a 96 f150 with the 5.8 and a harness from a 91 mustang i scrap since it's a obd2 computer it won't work. any advice or feed back will help. I have no big plans just to get a better throttle from it. Since I have a 93 mustang kind of want the same response haha.

what is the strategy of the ECU? The three-letter code? Only certain ones can be programmed. The wiring you will need to change in the harness is the injector wiring and the Mass air sensor wiring, not really a lot. Can be done in-place to get the job done.

Rikil thanks for the feed back. I went to the junkyard on Sunday and came across a 95 f250 with 5.8 and e4od. Luckily the computer was still in the truck and the harness was still on the truck minus some plugs that where cut but don't look too bad. Now I just hope everything plugs into place. The numbers on the computer F5TF-12A650-AEC.
