Grinding sound shortly after start up

My wife's 2003 Expy has started to make a noise on start up that seems to be when an accessory kicks in. I'm thinking the a/c. A second or two after start up, there is a clunk or grinding sound that happens for a split second and then it's gone. A/C is working fine. I haven't noticed anything different in the engine bay like a worn pulley or anything. This doesn't always happen, but 7 times out of 10 it will.

Has anyone had experience with anything like this? I know my description is kind of vague. Sorry.

Thanks in advance.

What happens if the A/C if off when it's started up, do you still get the noise?

I tried it this morning with it off and it didn't do anything, but it is pretty random. I will try keeping it off for the next few days when we start it up to try and isolate it to the a/c. Thanks.

I don't know what it is but my 04 with the 4.6 makes what I'm guessing is the same sound. It happens year round randomly regardless of AC use. It sounds like a clutch engaging very roughly. It's been happening for at least 2 years and whatever it is hasn't broken yet.

I didn't think about his before but I think it happens more in the winter which would make sense because I'm pretty sure the defrost engages the AC, and I leave that on a lot more than the AC in the summer. I've always assumed it was the AC clutch anyway, but as I said, hasn't caused a problem yet in two years.

my 06 has always done it, randomly. It is the ac and there was a tsb on it. They said it has something due to with the refrigerant and it is normal. I will search thru my posts because I posted it and I think it was on this forum. This is of course if it is a grinding sound you hear after starting the vehicle up. i will typically open my door and start the truck up after work and shut the ac off immediately - then turn it on. Kind of a PIA because then I have to put it back to recirculate. It only appears to do it after it has been sitting for a while. Hope this helps even though it is not a solution, Mike.

Here it is

Found it - not a TSB. It is a OASIS SPECIAL SERVICE NUMBER 19311

"

19311 2003-2006 EXPEDITION/NAVIGATOR - MINIMIZE GRUNT/POP NOISE BY TURNING A/C TO VENT BEFORE EXITING THE VEHICLE - DO NOT
REPLACE COMPONENTS
SOME VEHICLES WITH AIR CONDITIONING UTILIZING R-134A MAY EXHIBIT A MOMENTARY GRUNT/POP AFTER BEING PARKED FOR SOME TIME &
THE COMPRESSOR IS ENGAGED BEFORE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT HAS WARMED UP. THIS IS DUE TO LIQUID R134A BEING PUMPED OUT
OF THE COMPRESSOR. R134A WILL TRAVEL TO THE COOLEST POINT (THE COMPRESSOR) ONCE THE ENGINE HAS COOLED, DUE TO THE
DIFFERENCE IN TEMP BETWEEN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT & THE VEHICLE INTERIOR. WHILE MANY VEHICLES HAVE PCM STRATEGIES THAT
ADDRESS THIS BY REPEATEDLY CYCLING THE COMPRESSOR ON START- UP, THIS MAY NOT TOTALLY ELIMINATE IT. REPLACING A/C
COMPONENTS WILL NOT ELIMINATE THIS. COMPONENT DURABILITY IS NOT AFFECTED. MINIMIZE THE NOISE BY TURNING THE A/C SYSTEM TO
VENT BEFORE EXITING, & IN MILD AMBIENT TEMPS (APPROX. 50-75F) WAITING A FEW MINUTES BEFORE TURNING ON THE A/C OR DEFROST."

from http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/bo...expedition.pdf

Hope this is allowed because I sited the source - my actual source was in print though.

Thanks, Mike

Our 2003 has been doing this for awhile, too.
I was thinking maybe the idler pulley bearing or the tensioner bearing might be going, but they spin smoothly by hand.
I'll have to try turning off the A/C before shutdown and see if it helps.

Oh yeah, my 2006 expy has been doing it for about 2 years and then finally my air was blowing hot air in the summer! Took it to dealer, they replaced the compressor and replaced freon. But it kept on making the same noise, 3 months later, I had hot air again. Took it back to the dealer, they said they had to rebuild or replace the condenser this time. But, it STILL makes a crazy loud noise when I turn on the air. So far it still blows cold air. At least THIS time. But I need to take it back, seems like it's getting louder than before. It's really scary sounding. Like something might fall apart!
