CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL HOW TO BENCH TEST THE COIL PACK ON A 5.4L I HAVE A 98 EXP. AN ITS RUNNING LIKE CRAP,SKIPPING,CUTTING BACK . IT RUNS FINE UNTIL MOTOR WARMS UP ,CHANGED PLUGS BUT DIDNT HELP AT ALL.CHECK ENGINE FLASHES AND GOES OUT BUT SHOWS NO CODES. THANKS
Take it off the plug, stick a screw driver in where the plug goes and VERY VERY carefully explain to your wife the difference between "Bump it" and "Crank it"....Just kidding, I have no idea but I laugh just thinking of my days as a 16 year old looking for spark.

Try this....
Resistance between the two tabs (where the conn. goes) is .8 ohms on a brandy new one I have. I keep a spare now. Resistance from each tab to the "center" is ~5.8K ohms. I think it needs to be within 4K--->10K.
I think those coils may be different between models. I had a tech at the dealership test one he had lying around, and had 2.4 ohms across the connector, and the same 5.xK to the center.
Check the boot on the coil. I noticed mine were cracking so I just bought a bunch of the boots.
Also, If you find that a coil has not been firing, check the plug.
BUT DON'T FORGET TO CLEAN OUT ALL OF THE CRAP THAT FALLS IN THERE!! BEFORE taking the plug out.
i too made the mistake of washing the engine. i have been fortunite to only have a small miss that is not too noticable. however, i cannot stand it and must correct it. i've got new plugs standing by. i want to attack this in one sitting. you mentioned ohms testing the COP's. but how do you test them under a load? i belive this is were i will find the true problem. anyone know how to do this without giving the dealership $100 to do it?

I believe I may also have a problem with a plug but I'm not brave enough to try and test it myself, anyone know if someplace other then the dealership could test them for me, I dont want to pay an arm and a leg for just a test to be run, I need all the arms and legs I can get to pay for gas. Thanks
i was told that there is no test for the coil on plug setup what i do is put my camper trailer on and leave the od on and go down the hyway till it misses then the light flashes and auto zone tells me which cylinder missfired and i fix it the coils are 50 bucks a pop at auto zone but if you can find a salvage yard with that new a model u can get them cheaper

Mine is missing but the check engine light won't come on. Will it throw a code without the check engine light one? I assume it doesn't but just wanted to check.

Yes. Very definitely. The check engine light only comes on when the misfire rate is sufficient to damage the converter. But it may still provide a readable pending code. Beyond that, info is stored in the Mode $06 misfire counter on a cylinder-by-cylinder basis, which can be retrieved with any scanner capable of retrieving mode $06 data.
Good to know, thanks. Whats the converter? I ended up swapping them out until I found the bad one. Number 5 cylinder coil pack was bad. Runs like a dream now.
