It's really not as dangerous as it looks. There's not that much pressure when the tire "jumps" onto the wheel and you only have a few seconds to attach an air hose before the burning ether will suck the tire back off. I've done it many times, one of the biggest tricks is to use a known starting fluid as they definately are not created equally.
