ECM Engine Computer HELP!

I own a 1992 Fleetwood Pace Arrow(class A) RV. Just recently the engine would not turn over. I drive it about every other month, so the RV was sitting for about a couple of months. I had a mechanic(35yrs. experience) look at it and it check the fuel pump(inside the gas tank) and it was NOT running. When he hooked up a direct hot wire to the pump, it was working...I replaced the fuel filter a week before the problems and the mechanic checked the fuel injectors and there was no fuel going to the injectors. He put ether in the intake, and the engine temporary started and died, so he determined it was not the ingitation module. So he determined it was the ECM computer. I found a company in Houston who could rebuild the computer and I shipped it off. They called me and said the ECM had already been rebuilt and could not be done again. I found out that the previous owner took it in for the recall <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:RelyOnVML/> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte So the Houston company found me another ECM with the correct numbers and it was shipped out. Installed the ECM...same problem, it will not start. I went to the Ford dealer and they said they could program the ECM I just bought, but they need the old ECM to get info off of it. Well, the company in Houston, AUTO AND HEAVY DUTY COMPUTER SUPPLY does NOT answer their phone nor do the return emails messages. When I bought the new ECM, I requested that they return the old ECM and I would pay shipping. So....the problem I have...how do I get the new ECM programmed with the correct settings. Ford says they need the old ECM to program the new ECM...and if this Houston company does not return my old ECM, I am in trouble...any suggestions?...I am leaving on a family trip in 10 days, so I need HELP right away. Here are the stats on my RV:

1992 Fleetwood Pace Arrow 33ft.
ECM # F29F-12A650-ANA
Ford 460 7.5L

These Ford PCMs do not need to be programed to operate properly, all you need is box that is designed to work with the 7.5L/E4OD combo. I suspect that since this was a working vehicle that has not be modified your problem is in fact with the TFI(ignition) module or the wiring between it and the PCM, because if the PCM does not get a cranking pulse from the TFI it won't fire the injectors or turn on the fuel pump. I suggest you install the PCM and pull the codes to see what is being flagged, that should point you in the right direction.

BTW.. has the TFI module been changed recently? If so be sure that you have the correct module as there are black and grey versions and they are wired slightly differently and will not interchange. If your vehicle originally came with a grey module a black will not work.

Thanks~~~

Thanks for your reply...QUESTION? what is the difference between a PCM and a ECM? I was told it is NOT the ignition module because the module only sends a spark to the injectors..and if putting ether in the intake and it kicks over, only temporary, then it is not that module. Also, there was a recall in '94 and I was told and read that they needed to 'reprogram' the ECM...so the new or rebuilt ECM probably needs this reprogramming? I REALLY REALLY appreciate you responding to my thread...being a old novice, I am learning...I just hate to pay for a fuel pump..NO THAT IS NOT IT...pay for a module...NO THAT IS NOT IT...pay for a ECM...NO THAT IS NOT IT...and by the time it is fixed you have your retirement spent...so all inputs help me alot...I am going in tomorrow to talk to the service manager at the local Ford dealership. I was told he programs the ECM and can tell me more...hopefully I do not need the old ECM, because that company in Houston will not return emails nor answers their phone...THANKS AGAIN, I really appreciate it...

The ECM or PCM or what ever you want to call it is not reprogrammable for your F53.
If you need another Computer (ECM/PCM/EEC) you can get one in Joplin, Mo. at the big rv salvage yard there. All 1992 F53 460 RV's used the same Computer.

Here is the Joplin, Mo, RV salvage yard information:
Colaw RV Parts & Salvage 10389 Cimarron Rd. Carthage, MO 64836 (417)548-2125 Email: Used RVs and Motorhomes - RV Parts | Colaw RV Parts and Salvage

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

First of all, Thanks Subford for your replies...my mechanic told me that if the fuel pump works with a hot wire connected(it was NOT working until he ran a hot wire directly to the battery)...and the fuel filter is brand new, the fuel relay is brand new...and he put ether in the intake and the engine was kicking over, but temporary, so he determine the igination module was OK, then he said the only other thing was the ECM. That is when I shipped it to Houston..they still have MY ORIGINAL and won't answer emails or phone calls. I have another ECM I got from Salt Lake and I talked to the manager and it was tested before they ship and it is guaranteed(90 days). When we hooked up the new(rebuilt)ECM it still would NOT kick over. So I researched online and there was that recall in '94 and on the case of the ECM is stated "Exhaust System Catalyst...Powertrain Control Module...Idle Air Control Value Replaced"...so the previous owner took the RV into the dealer to do that. Now, last week I took the new ECM into the dealer and PARTS salesman looked up the number of the ECM(it has the same numbers as the original) and he told me that unless I get the original ECM back so they can get all the info off of it, then they could NOT program the new ECM. He told me to come back and talk to the SERVICE manager who programs the ECM's and he might have an answer. Now, from what you GOOD FOLKS are telling me, they do not need to program the newer ECM...or maybe have the dealer put in the program of the recall...I am HOPING and PRAYING I do not need the original ECM because it is stuck in Houston. Also the dealer says go back with VIN numbers until 2002, so he cannot look up any info on my particular ECM...I just want this RV to run so I can make the trip in ...counting 9 days...I will let you know what the service manager says...and once again, THANKS SO MUCH for taking time on your weekend to help me out...I REALLY appreciate all the replies...thanks again....Kenny

From talking to other RV F53 from 1989-1998 owners none of the Ford Dealer know anything about these RV's.
Most Ford dealers will tell you to take it someplace else as they do not work on them.
More than likely what the Service Manger is going to tell you when you talk to him.
You need to go to a place that just works on the Class "A" (F53) RV's and not the Ford dealer.
Call Coach-Net or Good Sam or whatever road Ins. you have and they will tell you where in your area is a shop that will work on it.

Or if you want we will walk you through working on it and get you going if you are able to work on it yourself. All you need is a test light to find out what is wrong.

Thanks

Thanks again Subford...well I have paid my mechanic to get it going...so depending on the outcome tomorrow...I would REALLY appreciate it if you could do a walk thru with my mechanic...he has all the equipment..so, if I connect the new ECM(which has the same numbers as the original) and it still does not start...it is something completely wrong? I was told by the PARTS department that the ECM has to have all the info about this particular RV programmed into the ECM so it could tell parts of the engine what to do in certain circumstances. Then another person who replied said you cannot program this ECM because it had a ROM in it and that first years to program a ECM was like in '96. Again...I REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate helping me and if you can walk my mechanic thru any steps, I would be FOREVER GRATEFUL. I just want to get back on the road...yes, I do have Good Sam..and I did call a local RV shop, but they told me they just go to the dealer on ECM problems...anyway, THANKS so much Subford for you time and knowledge..your a good man...kenny

You may email with your phone number if you would like to talk about all of this.
My email address is at the bottom of this post.

By the way I do not think you have the wrong computer for the RV.
The number on it should be ECM #F2PF-12A650-ANA.
The number on computer for the RV when new was ECM # F2TF-12A650-HA and its program code was L2Z.
But the computer was replaced with what you have now with the Ford recall #94b37.

Subford is giving you great advice, and if it helps you feel better about it, he's 100% correct. It sounds like your Ford dealer doesn't know and may not really care.

Your Engine computer is an OBD-1 system, and cannot be reprogrammed or reflashed by the dealer. The later OBD-2 system can, but you don't have one of those.

Did I miss a suggestion to check the inertia switch (whose purpose is to stop the fuel pump in the event of an accident).

Your mechanic should also be able to check the input to and the output from the fuel pump relay.

It is worth having an EQUUS 3145 code reader. At $25 it makes reading codes and doing tests much easier than counting light flashes (although that will work also).

If you intend to persist with getting advice from your Ford dealer, then I'd strongly suggest that they show you that they have a copy of the Ford publication called
"Powertrain Control/Emissions diagnosis On Board Diagnostics 1" for your model year or thereabouts. If they don't have that, then they're groping in the dark, and would rather change components at your expense until you go away.

Thanks for your reply mjp_t98 ...YES YES YES, I am so glad that subford is on this site. Boy he is so knowledgeable and he was the first to point out the new ECM is the correct one with the recall installed. He even sent me the recall notices(5 pages)...WOW..I just hope my mechanic follows subford's instructions and gets the rig going...yes, we put in a new fuel relay. I forwarded all the info to my mechanic and subford was nice enough to lend a hand over the phone if he needs help. But I would sure like my original ECM back. I'm going to my bank tomorrow and file a dispute so at least I can get some money back, since the Houston company is not repsonding to emails(sent maybe 10 since July 2) and countless phone messages left and unanswered. But, I also want to thank everyone who replied and had GREAT advise and ideas about the problem. A GREAT group of knowledgeable people who are out to help novices. Thanks again

The problem with "experienced" mechanics or really any mechanic that doesn't specialize in EFI, is they have very little if any electronics knowledge, so when something goes wrong with a system like this that is now obsolete and won't connect to any of the current diagnostics tools they are completely lost. But you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand the relatively basic EFI system in these vehicles, you just have to be able to follow a wiring schematic. Below is a diagram for the TFI ignition system, you will see that the coil is connected directly to it but there are other signals going to the EEC, and since it is the EEC that controls the injectors and fuel pump it is entirely possible for the engine to start with primer fluid while not running from the onboard tank if there was a fault in the TFI module. These modules don't always fail totally dead they can and do partially fail, or as already stated you could have a wiring issue between the module and the EEC.. mice like to chew on wires in stored vehicles. I think if you have your mechanic examine this system a little closer you'll find your problem.
