So, lately my M5OD tranny has been shifting EXTREMELY sloppy. Its hard to find third, its sloppy in gear (side to side motion) and in my head im thinkin "great, time to drop the tranny and rebuild...no fun!

But! After doing some research i found that the M5OD's are notorious for the bushings basically disappearing and/or just desenigrating

So, i decided to replace the bushings and MAN did that help! It honestly feels like a brand new tranny! So, i figured id share how easy this replacement is for those with a similar problem.

I can speak for all of the M5OD guys when i say THIS IS A COMMON AND ANNOYING ISSUE.

Most of the time, the bushing isn't even there anymore when you take the shift plate off. I'm not kidding when i say, it made a huge difference and I'm extremely happy.

Too bad its not at parts stores though, they don't consider it a "maintenance" product. So it has to be shipped from an outside vendor.

 

Mine is horible......I LITERALLY have to throw my shifter into 5th.....

 

Be careful doing that too much considering you can really damage your clutch forks.

Take it from someone who had to drive 100 miles floating gears because the slaver cylinder decided it was done with its life and took a shat.....that did a number on the ole' girl

 

What are these springs and bushings you speak of ? Taken apart three different trucks and never saw bushings in any of them.

These kits look to be for the 5 speed transmissions, does anyone know about the 4 speed? Mine has the same loose feel but the site does not have a parts listing for it.

 

Yeah its for mazda 5 speeds. (M5OD-R1 & M5OD-R2)

They MIGHT have it there, if not im sure ebay does. Thats just a recommended site because i got my parts within 4 days (bought monday and got it friday) and there were no hassles.

I did this on my 94 f150 as well and it feels like a brand new tranny. Its tighter than a ticks *** in gear now

All i have to say is that there is just bad news wes

 

I did mine a few months ago with a kit from The Gear Box in Michigan. What a difference! I was concerned that the shift forks were badly worn due to all the slop in the shifter. Like yours and apparently many others, mine had no bushings whatsoever when I took it apart. I think that the Mercon in these trannies must dissolve the bushings over time. There's no other way I can explain it. I removed the top cover altogether to inspect the internals, put in the shifter kit and a new gasket, flush out the case, and replace the leaking rubber plugs with steel core plugs. At no point did I see anything that resembled an old shifter bushing. Oh, and SideWinder4.9l said EX-wife...so that's not really bad news anymore.
