I just love how a 15$ part can have you going from "this tranny is old, worn out and sloppier than a $10 hooker" to saying "holy crap this thing is like brand new!''

 

I took mine apart today before ordering the kit. I wanted to make sure I could get the torx bolts out first. Not to any ones surprise here the bushings were non existent and I had one and a half of the springs dangling on top of the shifter. Kit is ordered, Ill report back after I get it and install. Fingers crossed it fixes my issue of 5th popping out and reverse sticking in gear at times. Thanks for taking the time on the how to brother.

Perfect timing! Had the day off and the mailman brought me a little box with my shifter kit. Installed it and she is snug as new. Still have a issue with 5th and reverse, but already had a feeling a couple of bushings in the shift boot would not fix those. The kit I ordered didnt have any springs, just the top and bottom bushing, a metal washer, two new pins I didnt need to replace and the cover plate with new torx screws. I was able to squeeze the bottom bushing in past the original alignment pins, dropped the shift lug back in place. topped it with the other bushing, then the washer and finished it up with the cover plate. The shift pattern is a nice and tight now. Best $20 mod Ive ever done.

Got mine in yesterday....Was able to put the lower bushing in....Couldn't get the allthread bolt thingy out....But MAN DOES IT SHIFT BETTER....

Any ideas on how to get the piece out? I really wanna replace it all...

 

On my 88 4wd I had to pull the bench and carpet to get the tranny hump cover off. I couldn't get the new pins in without doing that.

 

Did mine this A.M. on my 96 EB...works so nice that I don't want to sell the truck now! (really!) Let's all give Ducttape the feedback rep points he deserves! Thanks for the vid, too...made the job 1-2-3- easy!

I FINALLY got my whole kit into mine...The lower bushing really made all the difference...The top helps...Sorta....

As for the cover plate...Now I won't have to smell hot tranny fluid now...lol

ANYWAYS

Just got the kit for the shifter.

Problem I am running into is getting that bolt the holds the shifter to the stub. There wasn't a nut on there and the bolt is tore up on one end.
When I get a nut for said bolt I believe I thread it on the side with the least amount of thread showing correct? OR I can tap it out with a hammer.




Also I can't seem to get those pivot pins out but they don't look too beat. So Ill just save the new pins for now.





UPDATE: m12x1.25 is the nut size for the shifter retaining bolt. Was able to impact the nut on and pull that retaining bolt out.

 

Yup you got it right with the bolt and nut. A pretty slick system if you ask me.

As for the pivot pins, I can't really comment on how to remove them since mine were already loose and fairly worn. Pushing them back in with some thread locker has been doing the trick for now, but I ordered the bushing kit from the dealership the other day and it to help tighten things up a bit more. If you run into other issues, let me know.
