Windows Vista, Firefox 5.0 (though it happens on IE as well)

Occasionally my cursor will freeze and I'll hear a "beep"...after a few seconds the cursor goes back to normal, and I get a pop-up that says I have a script that is busy or has stopped working. The pop up gives me a choice to wait for it to start working or stop. I always choose wait, if that makes any difference. The script in question (and I have no idea what a script is, so maybe you can enlighten me on that too) shows a ford-trucks.com URL and a 12 character code, followed by "avg_ls_dom.js:396". My ever-so-limited knowledge tells me that this probably has something to do with my bloated, over priced, resource-hogging anti-virus package but I've got absolutely no idea if it can be corrected on my end.

Any and all ideas/suggestions are welcome, but I'll warn you that attempting to talk me through a potential fix might try your patience

 

I agree it is your AVG anti-virus, and it doesn't like some java script that is running, or trying to run. Maybe tech support can tell you what that script is.

I would put AVG to sleep for 15 minutes and see if it stops. But I have to warn you that if it is a malicious script, you would be giving it free access.

Did this start with FF 5.0? Isn't that still beta?

 

Actually it started after I downloaded FF4 (which really sucked, btw...5 works much better) though that could be coincidence since the same thing happens in IE.

5 could be beta, I don't know.

Pretty sure I've got the latest Java update (10.2?)...could it be that there's an add-on that's not compatible?

 

Try Super Anti Spyware. It's free. I run this along with my AV, and it will occasionally pick up something that's been missed.

Another thing I like is Iolo System Mechanic. It does a lot of maintenance that I don't have time for, or don't know how to do. My desktops have run better/faster since I started using it. They don't crash, which is surprising with me pushing buttons.

 

Steve, you could try deleting all the cached java scripts. To do that, start the Java Control Panel which will be found in Windows Control Panel. On the General tab you will see Temporary Internet Files, and a button for Settings. Click that button, and then click Delete Files.

 

These guys both say it is a bug in the Surf Shield component of AVG, and they had to disable it.

The script that was mentioned in both of those blogs is the exact same one that I'm seeing. In my AVG components list there are two shields; resident shield and online shield, but nothing that's called surf shield. I guess I'll try disabling each one separately and see which makes a difference.

 

Our desktop goes into "molasses mode" every once in a while. Actually, more frequently than that.

After some searching, it was suggested to turn off Microsoft Automatic Updates.

I did, and the problem has disappeared on that computer.

Doing an update by turning auto update back on causes the problem to return.

It's a known problem, but it seems M-soft isn't in a huge hurry to correct it, so there's probably something else (surreptitious) going on.

Edit: After thinking a bit, this may not be even remotely appropriate to your situation, as my operating system is XP, SP3.

But you never know, stranger things have happened.

Anything with a :js suffix is Java.

As I am running a different operating system, I can't give you any clues, but I have found that Googling the script's name usually turns up something on the compu-nerd forums that's helpful.

Steve, with Vista you have a tool called Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Can't run it from the shell, have to run it from the command line.

From the command line, just type MRT and press enter to run it. See what it finds.
