truck running or shut off during fill up

with the hot weather here my question is do you leave your running or shut off while filling up with fuel? This is my first summer with a diesel. So for the people who tow alot and are ready to fill up do you leave your truck running while filling up or let the turbo cool down shut it off then fill up? Just wondering.

I used to leave my 03 7.3 running while I refueled. Sold truck. I tried leaving my 99 7.3 running while refueling but the fuel gauge got stuck halfway up. I had to shut it off and restart for it to read normally.

Now I just turn the truck off, but I would prefer to leave it running, especially in the winter.

I always shut mine off. I dont ever see anyone else at the station filling up while idling. Plus it takes like 15 minutes to fill it up.... Lol

IF no one is around me I will leave it running. One less start up on the starter and one less cycle on the GPR. As for the 'gas' gauge, it will slowly come up of the point of fullness.

If I am towing, then I usually leave the engine running because I want to allow the trans fluid to cool down while I am filling up the tank. I will also leave the engine on if I have passengers in the cab during the summer (A/C on).

Otherwise I usually shut it down when filling up as not to waste fuel necessarily.

I'll leave it running on trips or when the turbo is hot but shut it off at the local station, just depends. Fillup time is fairly short now with the in-tank mods done.

To follow the filling station's rules, you should shut the engine off.. But, yes, it is good to let things cool off before shuting down..

I always shut er down. I spend lots of time putzing with DK cleaner, checking fluids, cleaning windshield and having to deal with the creding card limets. Takes me forever to top off, but its "me" time with the rig!!!

Question. What is the legal stance on this? Do those "shut off while fueling" apply to gas or diesel or both?

i know for gas you should shut off. if doing it on diesel is illegal than most truckers should be in jail. i leave mine running. 99% of people here leave them on.

I leave mine running to cool the turbo, the trans fluid, and my dogs.
Very few big trucks shut down for fuel. When I drove OTR my truck would run for two weeks straight without shutting down.

the cop that issued the ticket said if the truck had been at the diesel only pumps, it would have been fine. however, the "turn engine off" sign was clearly posted on the gas/diesel pumps and leaving the engine running was a violation.

dang, that was around 6 years ago...
