Hello. My guess is that your nut is under the intake manifold and sitting dangerously close to things like valves, pistons, springs, crank, etc. If that's the case, you will be forced to remove the carburetor and then the intake manifold in order to get the nut out. It's not that hard of a job. But it just takes some time.

IF you are lucky enough that it fell all the way into the oil pan, then you could TRY to fish it out through the inspection plate that can be removed around the oil plug (if your flathead is equipped with the inspection plate to begin with). You might be able to take a long magnet and fish it out without having to remove the oil pan. There will be a basket above the inspection plate that can be removed and cleaned while you're looking.

Yes theoretically it might not hurt anything in the oil pan, but that's a big gamble to take in case it's not in the oil pan. In my opinion, you really need to get that nut out of that engine. Otherwise, it could really cause some damage.

You'd think so, Doc, but check the link I posted. It happens more often than you'd think! Lots of anecdotal evidence that it's pretty harmless.

LOL. I guess so, but knowing my luck, it would find the one spot to wreak havoc and never make it to the oil pan.

i got a chuckle out of this title, also. IF nut is in pan, put a fairly strong magnet on, or around, drain plug. this will hold nut in place until next oil change. then you can remove it. if it fell into lifter valley, remove intake before something bad happens.

I had to admit it had me wondering if it was "left or right." Upon further thought, Doc has to be the expert here.

Got me to read the post. Glad there isn't a "T" in oil pan
