Hello. My guess is that your nut is under the intake manifold and sitting dangerously close to things like valves, pistons, springs, crank, etc. If that's the case, you will be forced to remove the carburetor and then the intake manifold in order to get the nut out. It's not that hard of a job. But it just takes some time.
IF you are lucky enough that it fell all the way into the oil pan, then you could TRY to fish it out through the inspection plate that can be removed around the oil plug (if your flathead is equipped with the inspection plate to begin with). You might be able to take a long magnet and fish it out without having to remove the oil pan. There will be a basket above the inspection plate that can be removed and cleaned while you're looking.
Yes theoretically it might not hurt anything in the oil pan, but that's a big gamble to take in case it's not in the oil pan. In my opinion, you really need to get that nut out of that engine. Otherwise, it could really cause some damage.
