2.8/2.9 swapped
My son recently purchased a 1988 ranger 4x4 supposed to be a 2.9L but has a 2.8L carbed motor swapped in out of a 1985 ranger? It is running but having problems with the TFI module on the dist. What I am wondering is if I cn go to napa & get a reman dist for a 1975-78 mustangII to run a duraspark?? would also like to run a 2100 carb but what should I get it off of?? any help appreciated.

Not sure if the 1980's EEC will work with the 1970's Duraspark ignition.
An easier modification would be to get some replacement parts from your local scrap yard to relocate the TFI module away from the hot distributor. Here are some pics of what I did:

I got a new TFI module, and was going to gut my old one to turn it into just a connector, but it turned out I just had to do some simple re-wiring to connect the distributor pins to the pins in the connector going to the EEC. I also got a harness with a matching connector, and a heat sink for a TFI from a later model Aerostar. The later model TFI modules do not have those 3 pins that connect to the distributor. I had to break off a couple of fins from the heat sink to make space for the 3 distributor pins of the earlier TFI module. The new assembly is now mounted at a much cooler place in the engine compartment.
Make sure you get the harness from the late model engine, as that will have the appropriate wires wrapped in foil to shield against noise. Use those shielded wires as the extension to connect from the dummy module on the distributor to the real relocated module. As you see in the pictures, I put a grounded copper braid around my wires for shielding.
