John,
Think that's the same adapter used on the V-8 5.0L Explorers. It will fit and clear everything on a later Ranger also, not earlier that '98'. The one show also has a built in oil cooler, the black thing between the filter and adapter. Got a project?

I have 1998 Ranger with a 3.0L; do you think this will be of any advantage? Or do you think I would be changing from one odd angle to another odd angle?

John, if I remember right, the 3.0L filter is near the back of the engine right over the starter, so plumbing would be a nightmare. Also note that this filter uses an FL820 size filter like a FL1A filter. That said, the attachment of the oil cooler housing to the block of a 3.0L may not be compatible because the 3.0L filter has a smaller base. Does the literature say it fits a 3.0L?

John, Too cold here otherwise I'd go out and look at one of the 3.0's. Best to do is like Joe said and just stay with what you have and save the $89 for gas.

Could I trouble you guys for the part number off the side of that Explorer filter mount with the cooling block built in? I can't seem to find a new one anywhere!

Thanks

Well Summit has the adapter but the cooler would be something else. It's sandwiched between the adapter and filter, not sure where to find the part number for it. The later Explorers do not have the cooler but a longer snout for clearance.
