e40d problem need help

new here so bear with me. while driving my 1990 f250 5.8 my truck would not shift out of second gear. stopped put truck back to park then reverse(it did engage) then back to drive started out fine but now it wouldnt shift out of 1st! so i manually put into 2nd and it shifte fine no clunk normal tryed to manually shift to drive and truck just reved like it was in neutral. manually put back in second and pulled over. I found that if i manually shift i have 1st and 2nd. if i stop or slow enough while in drive 1st will engage but will not up shift automatically only manually. Again when u manually try to shift into drive it just like neutral.there was no warning no slipping etc. any advice would be appriciated as this is my work truck

Ford Fuel Injection » How To Run a Self-Test Here is a link on how to check for any trouble codes, always a good first step.

You meed to ground the sti and then turn the key switch to on. You should get 2 digit codes.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...-problems.html Click on this link and read the post by subford. I think that your next step should be to test the TRS as he describes (drivers side of trans). Check that the electrical connector is clean. If the TRS does not check out then I would replace it.
