factory toolbox for beds
Hey guys just wanted to know on the 73-79 Ford trucks I was told you could get the toolboxes for both the shortbed an longbed. I was wanting to know were the toolboxes just for the passenger side or could you also get them for the driver's side? An what would you need to add them to a bed that did not come with them an how much trouble is it to add them to a bed & do you need to add anything to them like weatherstriping or anything & is there any place to buy parts for them at? An is there any factory locks or anything that can be added to them from the factory or aftermarket accessories?

If I remember right I've seen them on the 67-72 and 73-79 models, and only on the curbside of the truck. I also believe they were a factory option and were built right in to the box. So I think you could cut one out of another box and weld it into another. But then again I don't remember anything for sure anymore. I've thought about adding them to both sides of my truck. But I think they're rarer than chicken lips these days up north here. There is certainly a lot of unused space under the bed of a truck. And the extra storage would come in handy.
But like I said I know nothing for sure. I'm recalling this from memory when I was a kid and from what I've seen while running down the roads. I was always kind of surprised that LMC Truck didn't have anything in their catalogs on them. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what others have to say.

yea I am having the bodywork done on my truck & the bed needs fixed an found some but wanted to check if they were added to both the driver & passenger side of the bed. Some extra space would be handy just dont know what all I need to do to add them & I wish somebody would offer these for these trucks as accessories I am planning to remove the gas tank from the cab later on to give me some more room an run dual tanks on the shortbed.

Here's another thread on the subject here on FTE.

Helipirate is working on this mod and he found me 2 boxes out in Utah. Cost me a ton for shipping though. I'm probably at least a month away from getting to the job. I have a bed with one but I ain't cutting it out of a rust free bed.
Maybe ask nicely and he can find you one also.

I haven't had a chance to start mine grafting my drivers side tool box yet, hopefully in another week or so. I had to go back to work
But to answer the original question, to add the tool box you would need the door and the area surrounding the door to weld into the bedside and the plastic tub that is the box.
Also if you want to add it to the drivers side be aware that the contour is not symmetrical from front to back so when you reverse the passenger side door to put on the drivers side (if that makes any sense) it won't match the contour of the drivers side, so some extra body work will be required. I will have pictures of how I will do this in my build thread soon and hopefully Grinnergetter will too.
There is a factory lock on the handle to open it and I am not sure but I think I have seen the weather stripping in LMC. I have seen no other replacement or aftermarket parts for them. There are no other tool boxes that I have seen in the junk yards near me, just a few that got the tool boxes hacked out with a sawz all by me

Kalve, I believe that there won't be enough room ...lengthwise to accomadate the toolbox addition in the short bed, as well as the addition of the dual tanks, w/ your 74 crew being a shortbed and having a divorced transfer case... the placement of the midship tank is tricky, if at all possible. The aft tank will come w/ its own issues as well, the frame width is 34" and aft tank options are limited, that being that you can't use the tanks from the 37" wide frames, although there are choices, like aftermarket /custonm or some have used a broncoII tank, there are some factory produced camper special aft fuel tanks, as well as saddle tanks....I did get your pm, but my computer at home is experiencing some difficulties so I can't always respond..fwd me an email address and I can reply w/ some pics of the dual tool boxes in a LONGBED p/u bed that I had installed as well as a custom aft tank/saddle tanks and a camper special aft fuel tank..as far as the tool box install, it was welded in to the surrounding sheetmetal of the bed but I have yet to set the bed on the chassis, AND I forsee a problem w/ the un notched section of the tool box compartment coming in contact w/ the d/s fwd spring hangar, thus being the reason that the p/s is notched...I can confirm/dispell this problem once I finally set the bed in place
