Which Fuel Tank is the Best?

Hello all,

Im currently in the midst of replacing my front tank (16 g), pump and sender assembly. I pulled the tank and it is just awful, so I'm going to order a new tank. I've seen a few different brands: Spectra Premium, Fineline, Dorman, and Sherman. Thats just on Rock Auto! Any opinions on which one has the best fit and finish, longevity, etc., or does it even matter? Thanks in advance!

Chris

P.S. I have some pictures in my gallery if youre interested in looking at it.

PO put a 38 gallon spectra premium in the back. It is a well put together unit, plus good tech support from the factory, which is in Canada by the way.

I got my replacement front tank from AM Autoparts. Price was good, it came with the straps and they shipped quick.

Thanks for the quick replies. I decided to go with the Spectra Premium tank. My new pump is also a Spectra and it looks like the tank is pretty good.

5Rangers,
Im curious about that 38 gallon tank. Does it hang very far down?

L. Ward,
Thanks for mentioning AM Autoparts. I checked their site out. I like how they offer the straps with the tank. Unfortunately, I didnt see the tank I needed. Thanks though!

Jaime74656,
Took the words right outta my mouth. Well, great minds....

Yes I can, I had to put a new sender and pump in it since none of it worked. So, I got a sender and an extension kit from spectra and put it all together, it extends the pump down into the tank. Also, the sender, so what you end up with is it will read full for a long time, but as the tank gets down to about half it will read correctly down to empty.

It hangs down enough that it has been banged up. But it doesnt seem to hang down enough to effect departure angle. I have thought of adding a skid plate, it would be easy to make.

I havn't got the the rats nest of trailer wiring the PO put there, but it's on the list after I get done with the turn signal switch I'm replacing.

5Rangers,

At the risk of sounding silly, do you just keep a spare tire in the bed?

Haven't got that far yet, when I got the truck it didn't run, so I got it running, now I'm working on getting it in shape to pass inspection. Once I get it mechanically inshape and through inspection, then I can work upgrades and asthetics. So, I was thinking about some kind of spare tire rack for the bed.

Guess your checking the rear tire wear? The 2 rear tires are on the list for replacement, I'm sure they won't get through inspection since they're at the wear bars.

Hey thanks again guys for the help. 5Rangers, I hope you get your truck passin the inspection soon and post it up when you get that tire rack. I'm interested to see how that goes. Jaime74656, definitely post if you get those huge tanks youre talking about. Thanks!

Hello all,

Not to resurrect an old thread, but I wanted to let a project completion be known! I replaced my front fuel tank, pump and sender. The first pump I bought was bad actually. When I ran on the back tank it was filling my front! I went and got another new pump, took the tank down again and just replaced the pump this time. Works great!. Its kinda weird, cause that tank hasnt worked in years. Im lovin it. Ive got pictures in my gallery and I'll be posting up more soon. Thanks for all the advice I received not just on this post but my other one as well!

38 gallon tank mounted there is a bronco tank. It works great but you lose the space for the spare.
