Hi, i took this engine out a car about 15 years ago, and am wanting to put it in a truck i have. I am not sure what it is tho. I was almost positive it said 429 on the valve covers when i took it out, but somebody took them off and the push rods. I have yet to tear it apart but when i do i can get more numbers off the crank etc. This was all original in the original car it came in when i took it out.

I am confused on the numbers on the heads, the second number is missing? It is not hard to see it is not there at all. both heads.

Can anybody tell me if this is a good engine or one of the not so good ones?

I also have another 429 or so i was told. I can only get the heads and intake numbers right now.

If you took the first engine out of a FORD/MERC, it is most likely a 429. LINC used the 460 mainly. Both engines used the same block, heads, etc. except for the PI, CJ and SCJ.

The numbers I.D. it as a 73/ engine (head should read D3VE). It was a lower CR than the 68/71. 1972 was a very bad year. It is also an EGR engine and has retarded cam timing.

The second engine is a 1968 (most likely) 429/460. Just measure the stroke through a spark plug hole or a tear-down.
