7.3L starter help....

Exactly how do you get to the top bolt? Where do I purchase a bent neck short shank long handle starter bolt tool?

'02 starter hunh? Surely it's not held up by the two lower bolts, right? If it's easier and I have to replace I'll go with an '02. I think it's the solenoid or actuator on the starter that's bad, but I need to get it out to see..

it's alot easier you just have to drill the connector out a little bigger to fit the post on the small wire and it spins the eng. faster

i was able to get mine out by piecing together the right combination of long and short extensions and a shallow well socket.

Well... got the beast out using a 3/8" ratchet and extensions.

I have power on the starter post and the starter mounted solenoid, but I never hear the solenoid click. So... I'm thinking solenoid, and I can replace just that for $42 or the whole thing for $144. I've not thrown power directly to it as I didn't have my jumper cables last night, but i plan to put it between a coupla blocks and juice it tonight.

I'd like to get out as cheaply as possible, so what's the consensus on the starter motor being bad as well or just the solenoid?

10-12" extension will get you right to the top bolt.

I'd experiment with jumper cables and figure out whether the motor is bad or not. Put 12V right on the starter motor and see if it spins. If you have the starter out, clamp it to the leaf spring or a board so it doesnt jump around.
