How do I know if I have a Dana or Sterling rear?

Guys:

I am looking at installing a rear disc brakes conversion kit on my 88 F-250 2WD with 7.3 IDI. The company apparently makes kits for a Dana or Sterling rear. The axle has a tag on it and it shows 4.10 gears, but it is not clear to me how to tell the difference. Thanks for any help!

If your fill plug is on the stamped steel cover, you've got a Dana. If it's on the side in front of the left axle tube, it's a Sterling.

If your drums come off easily, it's a Sterling. If you have to pull the axle and pull the hub to get your drum off, it's a Dana.

Thank you!!

The drums come off easy, just like a car! And there is just a fill plug on the front side of it, to drain it I need to pull the cover off, so Sterling it is!

You defenently have a Sterling, but just FYI, the Dana axles in these generation trucks have the slip off Drums.

Proof on my camper, Dana 70.

Interesting... I had a Dana in my '85 and had to pull the axle/hub to get the drum off that one. Maybe a change they made along the way?

I have seen quite a few Vans with sterling style hubs and outboard drums, but never one in a truck. The van brakes seem to have branched off differently just like they still have Dana rears under them, and have never had a Sterling factory installed.
