Experience with Extang solid fold

I purchased an Extang Solid Fold for my 2011 F-250 directly from the factory. After a month, I wish I had gone with another product. Here's why:

The good:
  • It's very solid and strong.
  • Little to no water leakage.
  • Latches tightly.
  • Delivered quickly.
The bad:
  • There are only three slats for a 6-3/4' bed and the slat closest to the cab does not fold up. (I had expected 4 slats, but that was an assumption o my part.) When folded, only 4.5' of the bed is exposed, making for a very small loading area.
  • I chose this model so I could leave it on with a fifth wheel hitch. For the reason given above, I don't think I'll be able to do that.
  • It weighs 75 pounds and is very large, so removing it to expose the entire bed area is not a one-person job.
  • The foam seals were torn on two of the corners when it arrived.
  • There was a tail gate seal included in the purchase, which was one of the reasons I ordered from the manufacturer. It never arrived after a month. I was told they were changing suppliers. However, there is a tight seal between the tailgate and cover, so it's not needed. I just don't like being mislead.
I'm considering trying to sell the Solid Fold (it's in perfect shape) and buy another style. The BakFlip G2 and the BAK RollBAK G2 both allow full access to the bed. Problem is I won't get close to what I paid for the Solid Fold.

I just wanted to pass on my experience.

You probably would have saved some money by buying from an authorized dealer instead of buying from Extang who is going to charge you MSRP. Most authorized dealers sell below MSRP.

Actually, I was surprised to find that the manufacturer matched all other advertised prices.

I have the Extang Trifecta and it is light enough to put in the 5er and put it back on when I get where I'm going. Love the Trifecta and got it for a great price on Fleabay.

Yesterday I noticed that one of the locking handles is bent. No idea how. I called Extang and they are sending me a new one, but I have to cut out a section of the rail to install it!

Just keeps getting better and better.

I went with the Bak Flip because it will fold up against the back window if I need it too. So far so good...
