tailgate won't open

Anyone know how I can get my tailgate open without using the handle? I need to fix the actual problem but in the meantime I need to get it open to load things. The lock works but when I pull on the handle nothing engages to open the tailgate. Is there a part inside that has gone bad? Is this an easy fix?

There are small plastic clips that attach the operating rods to the handle - these are likely broken or missing on your truck. You may be able to see these when you lift the handle. To open the gate otherwise, remove the inner tailgate panel cover and you will see these rods. You can pull the rods with a vise-grip pliers to disengage the tailgate latch. The small plastic rod clips are sold at any auto parts store or NAPA and are simple to install.

Does anyone make a billet or just metal clamp for the tailgate latch/rod connector?

The brand new plastic ones I got worked fine for a couple weeks, but came loose. I'm using a pair of pliers to gently close the clamp with a "click" over the rod after checking placement.

I have more of these plastic Dorman latches, but wanted to know if anyone makes an actual metal one that can be screwed down tight.

queen of spades,
I believe your problem is the Dorman latch. Dorman has been producing junk lately. You might have to buy one from ford but it should last another 15 years.

Anyone happen to have the Ford part number? I don't mind paying more I just don't want to keep having to replace cheaply made clips.
