OT: Not a good day towing the boat home

Well not a good ending to a pretty good day. Tire started to wobble on the trailer when we were almost home. Ended up coming off when I was pulling into the gas station. Looked in my owners manual and looks like there is a inner and outer bearing. I'm going to check it out more tomorrow but here are some pics of the wheel. I'm just hoping I can find parts and the axle shaft is not damaged. More pics to come. BTW that's the drum still attached to the wheel..lol...

Wow Grant, thank goodness you didn't loose the tire at highway speeds, could have been a different outcome, or some wheel well damage at the very least.

Yeah, It was pretty obvious. I just need to figure out the extent of the problem and don't want to buy parts if my axle is messed up. I've already seen some signs of if but not sure where the bearing rides. My initial scope of it after getting home wasn't good but will check it out more.

I know and thankful, but did have ww damage but I can fix that. We broke down in ABQ, lucky we found a guy that would tow it on his trailer....wasn't pretty and he went 15-20 mph all the way to our house.

i have seen this at my job on 2 trailers this year. your spindle is likly to have damage, and most newer axel have welded on spindels which means you would need a new axel...

If its a Dexter axle, its not that difficult to fix, any trailer place will have the parts. prob need a new spindle and hub with bearings already installed. I do these quite often on boat trailers. It looks scarey, but in reality its a pretty simple job.
Glad that you caught it before it passed you on the highway.
Inspect, repack and replace the seals on the other side. Install a new set of bearing buddies and you good.

That's what I ran into with a horse trl, the dam spindle welded to the axel. Like Frank said if the spindle can be replaced it's not a bad job. Good luck with it Grant

We have not done any work on it. Not sure what happened other than it's jacked up now.

Yeah lucky it didn't let go on the highway, not sure what it would of done but I'm sure it wouldn't be good. It's a four winns trailer. Says they manufactured it but not sure the brand of the axle. I attached a pic of the axle spindle. I assume the scaring is where the outer bearing rides. Guess I need a new spindle. Thanks for the advice.

Yep I'd say you'll have to r&r the spindle, they are probably Dexter like Frank said so most any trailer place should have the parts.

Wow, glad that did not come off at high speed. Looks like you got by without a disaster. Glad no one is hurt and the boat is ok!

Well think I have it fixed up for now. I replaced the inner and outer bearings on both sides. I didn't replace the spindle, only the top part was scared and I think it will last a while. I just need to keep an eye on it and inspect periodically. After I told my wife the breaks have not been working for a long time and I chunked the old pads in the trash she was looking on the net to see how much new trailers cost.

I hear you bro and thanks for the concern. I did have some warning and slowed down when I felt the trailer acting wierd. I would hope the same would happen on the highway. After looking into the problem a little more the cotter pin broke off. So I'm thinking there was to much slop on the wheel causing it to break. Good reminder to check stuff out annualy but sometimes hard to keep up with everything. I have three trailers and three vehicles. I'm usually pretty good about my vehicles but sometimes the trailers get ignored a bit.

wheel

I kind of repack and check the bearings too often on mine. Usually they dont even need a repack. But i dont want a wheel to come off on a windy mountain road with the Whaler on the back! Joe
