More cruise control woes

2001 Ford Excursion V10 4WD. My master cylinder cruise switch finally started leaking, so I took it in for the recall. I know, I kind of put it off !

They put in the new wiring harness, and also the actual switch since it was leaking. Cruise worked perfect, no problems.

Three weeks later, cruise starts to be intermittent. The switches on the steering wheel were getting kinda loose anyway, so I just went ahead and popped for new switches. So new switches, and I still have the same problem. Intermittent or not working at all, and getting worse fast.

I did the diagnostics, and the left off switch lights the dash cruise light, and the on switch also lights the light, but no lights at all from the right side switches. Also, about every 1 out of ten try's, the left on switch doesn't light. All this with new switches.

Horn works fine, taillights work fine, no airbag light ......... just no cruise.

So is this coincidence that they just did the recall fix ?? Or something wrong elsewhere ? Bad servo ? Clock spring just starting to go out ? Not sure where to start.

Started looking at the wiring

I started looking around at the recall wiring to see if something was substandard around the switch or connectors. Initially looks okay.

Decided to take a look at the electronic control module/servo which is in front of the passenger side firewall. Someone in another forum posted a pic that showed the electrical connector had been fried.

So I popped the electrical connector off of the servo, and everything is covered in what appears to be some kind of light machine oil. So the servo part is apparently sealed in some kind of oil, and it appears there is some kind of breach somewhere. Probably creating all kinds of resistance and shorts. I can see how this connector could get fried. Generally speaking electrical parts covered in oil don't play very well.

The diagnostics don't show a bad servo, but with oil all over the connections, the signal back probably isn't any good. So I figure I need a new servo.

Been looking around, I can't find any aftermarket ones. Thought after ten years, one would be available. So off to the dealer to get a price and a part number, maybe once I have the part number can find a cheaper one online. I hear they're $300 at the stealership.

Gotta keep my X alive !!!

I put a used servo in mine for $75. Still works fine after more than a year. Any decent wrecking yard should be able to get you one in a day or two and they usually provide a short warranty.
