Rear Brake Shoes Cracked

All four rear brake shoe liners are cracked length-wise from top to bottom on my 1990 F-250 4X4. The liners are still 3/16" thick....not great but not too thin either. New drums and shoes will cost about $200.00 and I'm thinking about replacing them. Has anyone seen this before? I haven't.

Cheers,
Fred

The pad compound, had shattered, and the metal had countless stress cracks....

i would never buy new drums unless they were broken . . .

x3 on cheapo brake shoes. they are subject to some abuse back there, and out of wack adjustments just make it worse. add good shoes, forget about the drums, and keep them well adjusted.

Cheap Brake Shoes

Okay, I'm convinced the existing brake shoes are cheap and the cause of the cracks. Can I get some recomendations on where to get replacements? It sounds like Advanced Auto is not the supplier of choice. FORMOCO?

Thanks,
Fred

P.S. The drums are pretty badly grooved but I'll try to get them turned before I replace them. I'm a graduate of Our Lady of the Holy Brake Drum & Rotor so I'll spend the money on new drums to get round drums with good flat contact surfaces.

the drums allow your front brakes to work properly more than anything else. . .its up to you what you wanna spend your money on but as long as you can adjust them for proper pedal feel it really doesnt matter how grooved the drum is.

Well...Thats a kinda/sorta deal....

If the drums are REALLY grooved, they need replaced, because they'll wear the new shoes out prematurely, and/or make the shoes track out of line....Causing EVEN MORE issues....

As for brands....Ummm...Hmmm...I have Duralasts on mine now, no porblems yet....and with your receipt and the old shoes, I get a free set of replacements...

I have a rule of thumb that I always go by when buying parts or tools. If the name itself implies how durable, strong, long-lasting, reliable, well-made, etc. the item is, it's probably a complete and total piece of trash.

For this reason, I would never buy brake parts under the brand name "duralast".

But the above is right - rear brakes don't really do much. Raybestos isn't top quality, but it's good enough for rear brakes.
