Speedometer Calibration Codes
Where can I find the speedometer calibration codes for my 86 LTL 9000 electronic speedometer. I can't find them in my parts manual and my service manual is for an 84 model with cable driven speedometers. I know they will be listed someplace. I called a Ford truck dealer that used to sell the Heavy trucks and they no longer have the manuals and can't help me. I have 11X22.5 tires and a 3.91 rear ratio.

I have what I belive is a related question.
My 94 F-700 has a electric speedo. I just changed upmy gears and I'm going to a different tire as well. (I'm going to have 255/70-R22.5 tires and a 3.70 gear)
is there a "speedo gear" in the trans that I can get at the dealer and replace or is this a
"electronic fix" like Michelle's LTL truck?? If it is a gear that will be no problem as I can do the math and figure out the % of gear change.

Parts Guy Ed was unable to help me as he did not have the codes. How I finally was able to calibrate was through extensive internet search. During one of my searches I clicked on Classic instruments web site. Classic caters to the custon car and street rod scene. The make electronic speedometers for street rods and units that look 100% stock for certain classic cars like Fords and Chevys of the fifties and the sixties Mustangs. While looking over their site I noticed a picture of the back of one of their speedometers and it was identical to the one that was in my LTL. On a hunch that they may have been the original vendor for Ford I called them. The tech that I got hold of was very helpful but was not sure if they were the vendor of not and had only worked them for a few years. After much discription and talking with him I had him convinced that they were indeed the vendor. He had remembered seeing something about the truck speedometers in the past but didn't remember where he had seen it. He got my number and promised to call me back after he talked with someone he knew in another department that had worked for the company for years. About thirty minutes later he called me back and said the guy had come up with a book that had the codes. I had already given him my tire revs per mile and my rear end ratio, so he had given that to the other tech and he told me exactly which switches to turn on and the ones to turn off. I had ask him for the codes for two different rations as I am planning to change out my rear end to a 3.91 this coming fall. He also scanned the two pages that I needed and e-mailed them to me. I would have loved to have had all the pages that had the codes for these trucks which was probably about four to six. As it was I was thrilled to get the two. I am posting the two pages I have. I reversed engineered the math to figure out how to get to the correct code. You first have to figure your tire revs per mile. I have 11 X 22.5 tires on my truck and they will turn 498 revs in one mile. Next you have to know your rear end ratio. There are two columns on the chart, column one is pulses per mile and column 2 is frequency at 60 MPH. The formula for Frequency at 60 MPH is as follows Revs per mile X ratio X 16, X 60 Divided by 3600.
Example 498 X 3.91 X 16 X 60 divided by 3600 = 519.248 or 519.2
Pulses per mile example 498 X 3.91 X 16 = 31154.88 Round off to 31155
Go to bottom chart below (page 34) to the second line you will see pulses per mile @ 31218 and the frequency at 60 @ 520.3. you take the numbers you get with the formula and match it to closest number on the chart and that will put you on the money. I put my GPS in the truck to test the actual speed from the GPS to the indicated speed on the speedometer, it was dead on it all the way from start to 70. I might add if you do not have a 16 tooth sender or some call it the 16 pulse sender these formulas will not work for you. Apparently the older Ford trucks all used these senders. I looked in my 94 factory ford service manual and it has that same formula.
If anyone with 94 needs a code, PM me.
There are 3 different tables in the manual I have.
a 10 switch BEEDE speedo
a 12 switch BEEDE speedo
And a 10 switch Ametek sppedo
My manuels are for F and B 600-900 models
But it has info inside on L and LTL also.

Example: 498 (tire revs) X 3.91 (rear ratio) X 16 X 60 divided by 3600 =519.2
when you use the 519 code on the Ametak chart it gives a different set of switches to set than does the Classic. Before I got the codes for the classic I had tried the Ametek codes and it did not work for my speedometer. So make clear the the user has to know what make speedometer he or she has. I am still working to get all the pages that apply to the Classic models.

1. Determine which type speedometer/odometer is being installed. The following procedure applies for both "stand-alone" and gauge "cluster" type speedometer/odometer units. (Replacement units are either the 12-switch Beede or the 10-switch Ametek type. The 10-switch Beede has been discontinued for service.)
2. If the unit to be calibrated is a 10-switch type, determine if it is an Ametek or a Beede by looking at the type of electrical connection on the back. The Beede has four (4) "studs", while the Ametek has a single plug-in type connector. If a 10-switch Beede is replaced with a 10-switch Ametek, a simple electrical jumper wire will be included with the new speedometer.
3. There are three speedometer setting charts: Ametek 10-position, Figure 1; Beede 12-position, Figures 2-5; and Beede 10-position; Figure 6.
The info on figureing out which brand speedo you have is NOT in the factory service manual!!!

I called classic yesterday and didn't get much out of them. the guy I talked to was almost clueless. When I asked which one (brand) of the movements they used in thiers he said it was thier own. While that is a posssibility I seroiusly doubt it. (i don't think they supply ford with speedos, as i just think they use the same movement for thier instrument that ford buys from)

The TSB as I read is for ALL Ford truck of that era with electronic speedos. (it was just posted in the bronco section)
