Anti-Freeze questions

So what is the anti-freeze of choice for these trucks?

How often should it be changed?

What additive should be used?

How often should additive be added?

Should I install a filter?

That thing is pretty.

And Tim it never hurts to have a coolant filter, makes your water pump last longer. A lot of guys are suprised from the stuff the get out of the coolant the first few filter changes. And i too would like an answer to what coolant is required.

Nas Automotive has almost the same kit for less money and comes with the shutoff valves at no extra cost. What I use.

I went to a International dealer and got Shell Zone antifreeze and DC4A additive. The Shell Zone is a low silica (that's the big, important part, low silica). The DC4A is the recommended additive by International. They also have the test strips in the 3 packs. Out the door it was $57.

I pulled both block plugs before filling. It took right at 7 gallons to fill up. I put in 2 bottles of additive and it checked OK on the test strip. I expect I will have to add more soon so I'll be watching it.

I flushed twice with tap water to get it to run clear, and then did one flush with 5 gallons of distilled water. I then filled up with 4 gallons of antifreeze and 3 gallons of distilled water. It checks out right at 50% so there must be a gallon stuck in there somewhere.

Are you supposed to add water to the coolant and just run it like that? run 50/50, obviously not the pre mixed stuff. but i thought you were supposed to tun just straight coolant?

50-50 mix is what's required. You can buy the premixed 50-50 coolant, or
mix your own using distilled water. I prefer to mix the coolant with the distilled water before adding it to the reservoir, but it probably doesn't really matter.

Ya, 50/50. Buy the straight antifreeze and used distilled water like Craig said. Don't have to mix it beforehand, just don't use the 50/50 over the counter.

I got my additive at ford, like mentioned above, takes about 2 full pints (I think that is the size they came in, anyway 2 full bottles). Directions tell you right on the bottle.

Yes flush it then pour 4 gallons of straight coolant and then fill up with distilled water. The reason is you will never get all the water out from the flush so if you flush it then pour a 50/50 mix in because of the water still left in the system it will be too dilluted. Hope that kind of makes sense
