2004 F-150 Won't Shift Into Overdrive
I have a 2004 Fx4 that I took on a cross country trip this past weekend. Everything was running fine until I stopped for the night and got a hotel. Woke up the next morning and the "O/D Off" light was illuminated on the dash and the overdrive toggle button (on mine, on the center console next to the console mounted shifter) doesn't work to turn overdrive back on. When I got on the highway it wouldn't upshift into overdrive.
Any thouhgts? Hopefully this is just the switch assembly (?) so I won't have to do any major tranny work . . . However, I found it wierd that itf the switch failed it didn't fail in overdrive since I was running in overdrive the day before.
Also, does any have a link to a good thread about removing the trim on the center console in those trucks to get to the switch assembly? I assume that's a pretty easy job but I've never dug into the console before.
Thanks in advance for the help!

O/D Off
I haven't had one apart so pure speculation. Check the fuses and insure none are blown. Other though is the switch or wire - possible short or grounding? If the switch is pressed, if it completes the circuit then I'd look for bare wire. If it opens the circuit, then I'd check out the switch.
Sorry, just guesses.

To remove the floor trim panels, the Haynes manual says, "Remove the push pin fasteners securing the left and right floor trim panels at the front of the console. Remove the panels." All the shifting is controled by the Power Train Control Module or PCM. Did you check the fluid level? I just wonder if it could be something that simple. I don't know if there is a fluid level sensor on the transmission or not.

Thanks for all the help. I got the console apart and it turns out there was a bit of corrosion on the wiring harness (I think some coffee or something got down in the console onto the plug). The plug was just shorting out and the truck thought the O/D off button had been depressed. Anyway a little isopropyl alcohol and all better! Thank goodness it wasn't an expensive tranny problem!
Thanks for the quick replies and suggestions, it helped a bunch!
