96 f250 5.8 oil pressure sensor removal?

Hey there people who are smater than I. First of all I am no mechanic but I try as I hate to pay people to do things that (with a little help) I can do myself. O.K. Here is my problem My oil gauge doesnt move and after talking to some people the consensus is that it is my oil pressure sensor which I have located but cant seem to get ANY tool in there to remove it. The people at AZ (not AA) said i shouldnt need a special tool but I cant get a socket or wrench on it. ANY help will be appreciated.
96 F250 3/4 ton 5.8
61,000 orig miles
Thanx

There is a socket for oil sending units I have one. Look thru the Autozone. I have also gotten a deep well socket to fit, but I can't remember the size.

I forgot what size socket it is, but a special tool is not required. I'll see if I can find the size.

If you want to do something cool, use the earlier sending unit with the extension to make it an actual gauge.

If you do this you need to put a jumper on the resistor on back of gauge housing.

still no luck. I cant be the only person to change this thing. The one i bought and the one on the truck are two diifewrent sizes (22mm for the new one.) Advanced lent me an oxy sensor to try but it seems to small. went to the zone and bougght the oil sensor socket but its 1/2 inch drive and to long to boot. Looks like there is only room for a short socket. I am sick of running between those 2 stores that don't know anything! I'm thinking of taking the engine belts off so i can get to it easier. My check eng lite is on and oil gauge doesnt move so i am guessing this is why. ANY tips would be appreciated

You're sure there's A) oil in the engine and B) you don't have a major leak. Don't mean to sound rude, just wanting to make sure you checked the seemingly obvious. Lord knows I've overlooked small stuff myself my times.

I tried to look for my old one, but I don't know where I put it...I removed the oil filter to gain a bit of clearance. I'd say you are looking @ 7/8th, but I can't remember. I even think I used a crescent wrench.

edgethis: (1) yes I drive it now but inspection runs out and I need that check engine light to go out. She runs fine just the oil gauge is dead. I wiggled the wire while running and had my brother watch the needle but nothing. (2) no oil leak (from motor anyway. need to change differential cover once this is taken care of.)
Timbersteel: thanks for looking. I can get by the oil filter no problem its just clearance aroung the sensor. it seems the sockets are to thick and long to be able to seat on the sensor and I doubt i could get a crescent on it but its worth a try.THANK YOU ALL FOR REPONDING SO FAR. I will let you know when i get it and how. I will still check this forum just in case someone knows a trick in the mean time

I hate trying to track down all the little things that cause the dang check engine light to come on.

Another check. Are you 100% sure you are looking at the right sensor/thing? Also, do all you're other gauges work?

Yes, all the gauges work. I tracked the sensor down by the auto zone website "componant location" selection. I feel confident I have the oil sensor. The oxy sensor should be near or attached to the cat converter (or so i read)

The oxy sensor is easy. Should be right at the y on the y-pipe.

Remove your oil filter to gain clearance and go at it from under the truck... It's a huge pain trying to weave through all the junk on the top side to get to that oil pressure sensor.

ALL PREVIOUS HELP HAS BEEN APPRECIATED! FORD F250 4x4 5.8l
This is pushing me to my limits! It seems that no one has changed (or can remember exactly how they did it) a oil pressure switch or sending unit or whatever you want to call it. The new switch is a 22mm or 7/8 fits but the one on the truck seems bigger. (I have a gauge and bought the pressure switch for a gauge). deep sockets seem to be to long and wont seat. Short sockets are to short as the post is in the way (no room to cut the post off). Taking the oil filter off will not give me any more access. I have taken my belts off and my driver side tire and I can at least see it better. Cant get a cresent wrench on it. bought a 1 1/16 wrench cause it seems bigger than a 7/8 but the wrench is to long with no room to use it even IF it is the right size. I just cant believe that there isn't someone who can say definitivly how they have done this. again I DO appreciate everyone who has tried to help but so far nothing is working. I am so frustrated. I have spent a week or more dealing with this idiotic issue and may not even fix the check engine light when all is said and done. (cant find the obd port to diagnose the light. checked all places suggested on the internet but hmmmmm...figures i have the mystery truck. This is my first Ford and quickly becoming my last!
Again my truck is a 96 f250 3/4 ton 5.8 F150s seem to be easier to change for some reason.
PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP! Doesn't anybody else have this truck and changed this unit??

If your truck is obd 2 then o believe I read somewhere that the port is to be within 3' of the steering wheel. Usually right under the dash above the pedals.

Did the 250s go obd 2 in 96? Anyone know? I know most vehicles did but that may have been exempt due to heavy duty maybe.
