Question Need some info... 2002 Ford Explorer 4wd Not working

So my buddy's (who is not very net-saavy) 4x4 in his explorer is not working, no light comes on in the dash and won't shift into 4x4. So I offered to scan it for him using my Auto Enginuity with Ford package.

Well, found a couple O2 sensor codes.... but AE wouldn't read the 4x4 system.... said "communication failed" or something to that extent.

Would a bad 4wd Shift Control Module make the AE not be able to communicate with the powertrain and not be able to scan it?

Apreciate the help.

if you dont hear a click behind glovebox when you select 4High or 4low. then it couled be the 4x4 control module. it's behind glove box attached to the blower housing. replaced mine `2 yrs ago

Thanks for the input.

Were pretty sure thats what it is, but I'm really trying to figure out if the 4x4 Control Module being bad would cause a No-Communication Fault on a scan tool.

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 min, this sometimes allows the control module to reboot... Philip

I'm pretty sure he tried that (Because he was trying to clear codes) but I will double-check.

Still trying to find out whether a bad 4x4 control module will cause a no-communication fault with AE!?!?
