89' F250 fuel system

Hi everybody, I am new to the forum as well as the world of Fords. I recently purchased a 89' Ford F-250 4x4 with the fuel injected 351W. I accually have a couple questions...for starters the rear fuel tank has been removed and the truck just runs off the front tank. I am thinking about replacing the rear tank, however people keep telling me about the valve that switches between tanks, and how it has a tendancy to fail. Ive been trying to find my valve, and well..I can't.. I found a lil black canister on the inside of the driveside frame rail, pretty close to under the seat, it has 4 fuel lines coming in from the back of the truck, and 2 leading out to the engine, however i suspect this to be the valve, however I can not find any wireing going to it??

My other question is, my engine is pretty tired. I can find older carb engines all day long for good prices...can I simply put the fuel injected heads, and manifold off my engine onto one of these blocks and roll on with life, or is there more to it than that? Thanks for looking!

Mark,
Just replaced my fuel tank selector switch on my 1989 F150 with the 302. That is the selector switch that you are looking at, the switch is mechanical not electrical. The switch operates from the fuel pressure from what ever tank you select. The part is a ford only part, cost me about $170.00. Kind of a pain to replace.

Can't answer your question about the swapping heads.

I have the same truck and rebuilt the engine in it for $1200. I bought a kit from Summit Racing, then had a local machine shop bore the block/turn the crank, and install new cam bearings. The valve guides in the heads were in good shape, so I just laped the valves with grinding compound and an electric drill. Put it all back together along with a new cam from Comp Cams (made to work with the EFI) and it runs great. I think the cam was in addition to the $1200.
I am pretty certain the block/bottom end of the engine is the same as the older carbureted 351W engines. Just don't get it confused with the 351M or 351C--they are completely different engines.

HELP !!

Hey everyone, my problem is with air leaking into the fuel line somewhere. I've replaced the tanks, both pumps seem to be working as well although we do suspect the check valves in the mechanical may still be to blame. My biggest problem right now is this: I'm trying to replace the seal in the fuel line leading from the filter housing to the HP pump, it's just under a 1/2" long and is supposed to fit inside the brass head that threads onto it's mate at the housing. I cannot gets this seal to go in, has anyone dealt with this before?? BTW, this is a diesel.
