Eliminate fuel return lines?

I own a '87 F350, 460 carb. Bought it new, (378K miles)( now on 3rd engine) it has gone through 3 switching valves, 5 rear tank pumps, etc. I just installed a new plastic tank and pump in the rear. Now I have to replace the switching valve. Instead of putting in a new switching valve what is the down side of putting a 3 way brass valve without the return lines? I understand that I will have to flip the dash switch for the pump and turn the brass valve 1/4 turn and also flip a new switch for the gauge.
I have heard the term "hot fuel" system but I do not know if I have it. There is a fuel splitter with a return line comming out of it in front of the carb. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

That "fuel splitter" is the hot fuel return to the selector valve.
Without the return line you stand a good chance of vapor locking in warm weather.

Your fuel system:

That is not what I wanted to hear. In that case I will need to replace the switching valve. No offense to Ford but I don't want to pay $350. for a $100. part. Is the Pollak a good valve?
