Hello folks, I am new to this forum and looking for some advice on my F350 I recently purchased. It is a standard cab, 460, manual trans, 4x4. I have done a good amount on the interior to clean it up and make it a nice driver, such as rebuild the steering column, what a joy. I need to replace the intermediate steering shaft from the bottom of the column to the steering box. The bushing at the slip portion is completely gone. I was hoping to get a Borgeson replacement but upon further research, it doesn't appear they have one for my application. I contacted their tech department and they simply told me they don't have one for a 97. I also contacted the dealer and they told me they do have a replacement, at close to 200 bucks, they also told me the 97 intermediate shaft is a one and only for that body style. Can anyone shed any light on this? Are there any other options or manufacturer's I should look at?

I appreciate any advice on this.

It might be a shot in the dark but there might be one sittin in a junk yard thats not too tore up, it doesnt hurt to look

I've had good luck adapting junkyard shafts to my vehiclesnbefore. That's where I would start if I where you.

 

I'm pretty sure that's a load of crap! I believe that all the steering components are the same from the column to the gearbox for all '92-'98 F150, F250, and F350's (I'm not 100% positive. Others on here will know for certain). If you want a new one, this shaft should work... Borgeson Steering Shaft. Like the others said, check the junk yard for a used one.

 

Yea your best bet would be to check your local junk yard for what you need.

 

Yeah, I used this one on my truck a few weeks ago. It works great but is a little tricky to get in. You may have to loosen the steering box.

I am also in need of a new steering shaft and checked the Borgson site and was disappointed to see the listing stop at '96.
Is this verified that it fits a '97?

 

Well I can't "guarentee" it will work because I haven't tried to use the Borgson. But remember that in '97 Ford started making a light duty F250 based off of the new F150 body. Therefore, a lot of companies just list parts for the '92-'96 not realizing that the '97 HD is the same truck. I just went down to the junk yard and grabbed a shaft (I doubt it was from a '97) and it fit right in my '97 F250. So yes, I'd put money on the fact that the Borgson will fit the '97 HD.

 

Yes, it does fit. It's tight and you may have to loosen the steering box. I was swapping my box at the same time and had to wiggle it a little. But it does fit and fits great. Check my build thread^^

Shaft is longer than stock though. Collapsed it is only about .5" shorter than the one shaft is extended.
I decided to shorten it by an inch to allow it to collapse a little more.

I did notice that there is quite a bit of free play in the steering box input shaft.
New steering box is next I guess.

 

300 bucks for the new shaft? sounds like the SHAFT ...to me..I had this problem on a 78 bronco... just tacked it up.. now this problem on a 97 f 250..but I think I will try a u-bolt clamp first.....

 

just snagged a used shaft from a jy for 20 bucks. EASY to remove and bolt in. Alot better feel now.

I pulled out of a 94 f250 for my 97 f350. ( i think f250/f350 are the same) and noticed all the F150s looked different but wasnt really interested in looking.
