Ouch! My Rear End is Hurt!

Well, if anybody has seen the NW GTG thread, you already know. It seems as though I may have a bad bearing and possibly a nicked ring gear. (Dang T-1000) I had some noise a few weeks back along with a vibration. Knowing that my carrier bearing was the original one, I gave my buddy Ed a call and he had a new one to me in 2 days. Changed it out, all vibration gone! Yeah! This past weekend I was helping Ron (Luny1) change out his ball joints, hub bearings, and tie rods. Got it whipped out, then checked out the wierd brakes dragging like sound I was hearing. Jacked up the rear end, put transfer case in neutral, spun the tires. Ok, sound is there. Pulled tires off, pulled the calipers, spun the axles. Sound still there, hmmm. Disconnected the driveline, spun again, sound still there. Now I'm getting worried. Put it all back together and drove home. Pulled the axles today to feel is it was a wheel bearing, nope. Seems like it's a pinion bearing, will know more over the next week when I get time to really dive into it. Had to vent a little....

I'm hearing you Jeff. Keep us posted on what's happening and how you make the repairs.

Sorry to hear about this. I had a similar issue and it turned out the spider gears froze and a pinion lokked like if it had some bad cavities. I ended up replacing the entire rear end with a used one. Best of luck to you.

You and me both brother. Looks like I'm just going to re-gear/overhaul the rear axle. I need to go with some steeper gears anyhow, just wish I had the extra dough lying around to do a Tru-Trac at the same time.

Probably a dumb thought, but could it be the parking brake? Those are drum type right? And not connected to the caliper?

Just a thought...

Update- I picked up a rear end with 4.30 LS gears from a fella North of me that rebuilds nothing but SD's! He primarly deals with the 7.3's to boot, very good guy to know of. Anyhow the rear end was out of a 99' V10 4x4. Finished putting it in today. The rear rotors looked like new Ford ones, the ABS sensor works, the pads looked like they were about 5% worn, parking brake shoes looked great. $200, couldn't pass that up with 4.30 factory gears! Now to just do the front.
