Fuel mileage = big smile

Fuel mileage = big smile
I finally got to take a road trip with my truck and I was pleasently suprised at the fuel mileage. When I got to my destination I thought I had a faulty fuel guage because it was showing a decent amount of fuel still in the tank. What I did was filled the tank at the begining of the trip right at the interstate. Once rolling I put the c/c at 70 and drove, only stopping 1 time for a bite to eat. Once I got to where I was going, drove a bit around town and filled up. I hand calculated the mileage: 563 miles divided by 28.8 gallons = 19.54 miles per gallon. I was floored because for the last 20 years, if I got 15mpg hwy out of any 4x4 truck I had I was happy. The return trip turned out to be 20. According to the computer, it says that I could have gone 720 miles on a tank. I am hoping that this is the norm. The truck just tuned over 6800 miles on the trip. Sorry for the long story but had to tell somebody.

Mine is a 2011 4x4 Screw 5.0 3.55 gear only mod a KN filter 5500 miles so far.You have to drive it like Grandma is drinking tea in the back but it will give good mileage if you try. http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x...n/DCP_0780.jpg

I can get 18 MPG city 20 MPG Highway with my truck if I drive it like a grandma. It's a 2011 with the 5.0, 3.73 gears and a 36 gallon tank. After the Explorer it's great going so long in between fill ups, regardless of the cost. I'm seeing better fuel efficiency in addition.
The hard part is not unleashing the 5.0 at every stop in the city. When I do that, I don't see such good numbers.

That's great. I got 17.6mpg on a 500 mile trip this past weekend. That includes the box being fully loaded with a full rear hitch basket carrier on the way up, empty on the way back, and the wife and 4 kids with me the whole time. Not bad for that kind of load in my mind. I'll be making that trip by myself every week starting in July; we'll see what happens then.

I'm not complaining though, 20 MPG highway is great for a truck.

It's funny you say that - I never got 21.4 on a trip anywhere before. I took a trip from Ft. Lauderdale to Tennessee when I had only 800 miles on my truck and got 18.5 - 19 mpg. Now that it has almost 8,000 miles, it looks like it's getting better. Maybe it's just break in period.
I'm taking another trip this weekend - all highway. I''ll let you know how I do on this trip.

I'm willing to bet that the fuel in the truck with factory fuel didn't have ethanol in it. The crap we're stuck with to buy has at least 10% ethanol which is roughly 10% fewer mpgs. The exact same thing happened to me.

I have noticed a huge difference in mileage between different gas stations... Arco is the worst with Safeway coming in a close second to last of around 15 MPG on my 2010 SCREW FX4. When I use better gas like 76 or Chevron, my mileage instantly jumps up 2-2.5 MPG in the city... I am taking a road trip to CO from WA next month, towing my quad trailer. We'll see how the mileage does then. I plan on recording the mileage of different truck stops I use, to see which has been watering down their gas.

I have a 2010 5.4l extended cab 2wd with 3.55's 145"WB with about 18k miles on the clock, and on a recent trip to Nebraska and back (from KCMO) I averaged 21mpg hand calc. (computer said 21.5ish). At work (about a 40/60 mix of city and highway driving) I very rarely see below 18mpg now that "summer blend" gas is here. I am more than pleased.
